Tech Expertise [Minor Good Trait] Some characters may have been specialists in studying technologies of past eras, or are robots programmed to emulate the past as accurately as possible in every detail. These characters find it easier to use technology from a specific past technology level through careful study and practice.
Effects: This trait allows the character to choose a Tech level below their home tech level, and use technology from it with no penalties. This trait can only be chosen once and does not effect any other Tech Levels.
---------
I created this trait for one of my players who wanted to be a robot from tech level 6, but was programmed to use tech level 2 technology (he's a robot knight of the round table). I didn't want to use the Time Traveler trait because that represents knowledge gained from actual time travel and the chronon radiation that goes with it. I figured this would make a good substitute.
Well, what do you guys think?

Yes, I can see the use for this, even though it more or less duplicates Time Traveller in effect.
I could also see a Major version. In writing up stats for Trillian from the Hitch-Hiker's Guide, I gave her Time Traveller (Major) to represent her being taken off into space by Zaphod and becoming familiar with higher Tech Levels, even though she's not strictly speaking a time-traveller. A Major version of Tech Expertise would be a better fit for Trillian, or indeed any human in similiar circumstances.

I can see one of the PCs in my group ending up with this as, even though they're not time travelling, they're hanging out with advanced civilisations and he's making a point of studying with them whenever he can. Thanks.

Those are some good ideas. Here, let me do a quick revision:
----------------------------------
Tech Expertise [Minor/Major Good Trait] Some characters may have been specialists in studying technologies of past eras, or are robots programmed to emulate the past as accurately as possible in every detail. These characters find it easier to use technology from a specific past technology level through careful study and practice. Other characters may find themselves traveling through space (though not necessarily through time, that's Time Traveler) experiencing the technology of advanced civilizations and learning how to use it.
Effects: This trait as a minor trait allows the character to choose a Tech level below their home tech level, and use technology from it with no penalties. As a major trait, the character can choose either one tech level above them, or two tech levels below them to use technology from with no penalties. This trait can only be chosen once and does not effect any other Tech Levels.
