So, what did everyone make of Dreamland (the serialised Doctor Who animation that was broadcast in full on BBC2 on Saturday morning)? Personally, I thought the plot was okay and the aliens were all very interesting but the animation was cack. My blog review is here: www.heropress.net/2009/12/doctor-who-dreamland.html

I can see no reason why Dreamland wasn't this good - surely the BBC could have shelled out for a better animation house than the one they used? As that short shows, the talent is out there and you'd think people would be falling over themselves to demonstrate the extents of their talents on such a prestigious project?

I watched it the week before on iplayer and enjoyed every installment, the animation was abit limited and basic but i think the company they used was a fairly new one so i'll let it slide in hopes that the next special they make will be far superior...i do know that i intend to make the viperox and that scorpid swarm thing into monsters for my own campaign...not sure about the greys though.

The Viperox are your basic brutes, which the Whoniverse already has in abundance, but they had some nice tweaks. The "brain swarm" was visually very interesting, but I reckon the "greys" have the most potential for game development - as they are effectively potential allies... and there's not many of those around in the Whoniverse

I would have been much more critical of the animation a year ago. but after watching a season or two of Clone Wars, my standards have relaxed. ;D
I liked the story, for the most part, and the pacing. Almost makes me wish the last couple of live action shows had that kind of structure...

The animation style used for Dreamland reminded me of a short animation that they showed on the BBC a few years back. Rogue Farm, I think it was called. From what I recall, that piece was essentially machinima.
So yeah, I agree; surely the BBC could have managed to get some better quality animation than that? Still, it was entertaining enough, and it was nice in a way to see a New Who story split up into a serial almost like the classic series was. ^_^

A deliberate rotoscope/cell shading look seems to have been applied to Dreamland. It matches well with other made-for-children CGI shows (like that dragon one, whatever it is called) and possibly is meant to be transitional so it is close to traditional cartoons.
Plus, it's faster to render and therefore cheaper to make. (on a side note, the McGuffin appears to be a model bought from whoever made the Resident Evil titles/movie - as it is the container for the T-Virus)
However - other cell shading programs use motion capture. Dreamland used key framing, and it shows - smooth, unrealistic movement that makes everyone look like a puppet.
At least the story was better than "The Infinite Quest", but I am a bit bias there as I don't like Martha.

I watched DREAMLAND last night. Apart from the animation, I liked it. Course, living near Area 51, this story was extra amusing for me. I liked the Viperox and Skorpius Flies and would like to see them in the game. I'm curious about the Greys, but am less interested in them. What really caught my notice was The Alliance of Shades and its android MiB. do we think the Alliance is a predecessor to The Shadow Proclamation?

Dreamland? Meh. Oh it was ok, watchable. But I'd be lying if I honestly gave it more than 5 out of 10. While I understand they were keeping with the style of previous animations they're behind the times. Ok, I'm not expecting the BBC to come up with Clone Wars style animation, but the story was average too IMHO.
