LINKGiven that the Romans rarely bothered with coffins, and when they did they were almost always made of wood, this raises the question of who, or what, needed to be buried in a thousand pounds of metal...

Not to quibble, but there were STONE Roman sarcophagi as well. The Cleveland Museum of Art has one... True, most people never got that kind of treatment, but they did exist.
But the lead makes it for great speculation. Protection from something radioactive perhaps?
