The Doctor: You think you've been everywhere in this funny ol' world and then you land in a place like Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
An adventure set in your home town can lead to some exciting possibilities. Besides the obvious fun of causing mayhem in familiar locations, there is also the opportunity for the players to role-play as themselves.
A bit of research about your town can sometimes help fire your imagination. For example, my home in Bartlesville is famous for being the headquarters of a major oil company. There's a refinery not far away from us as well as a research facility. All this oil just lends itself to some possibilities...possibly a Nestene Consciousness story? We also have the Price Tower, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Bonnie and Clyde used to hang out not far from us as well, as did Laura Ingalls Wilder.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks their home town might make an interesting setting for a Doctor Who adventure. What is your town famous for? What is it's history? If there isn't anything inspiring...you could still have Daleks in a Mall, Slitheen at the Water Park, or Krillitane at the Burger King.

I started my campaign off locally. Used a local werewolf legend, sprinkled in a haunted hotel and went from there. It certainly made things very interesting for our first adventure without getting overloaded with setting details while trying to learn a new game system.

Great idea - have some karma. It's made me start thinking - I live in Derby, England, which is the furthest south that Bonnie Prince Charlie's army made it in their march on London, before turning back. Maybe I can use that as a setting...

The Doctor: Edinburgh, Scotland, cradle of the Scottish Enlightenment, birthplace of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson, home of the first cloned mammal... and reputed to be one of the most haunted cities in Europe, where an entire street of plague victims were walled up alive, its renowned anatomists did deals with Burke and Hare... Oh, and supposedly the resting place of the Holy Grail. Donna: You what? The Doctor: Well, actually Roslin's a separate town but you can get there by bus...

I've done this for other systems actually. Anyhow, my hometown - Canberra, the capitol of Australia, population 400k. What I like to think of as "a town with lots of monuments". What it has in the way of plot potential- The head offices of every government department, the federal parliament house built into a hill, the old parliament house now a museum (with some nice gardens, one of which I was married in and may have been the site of a cyberman invasion, or at least a boardgame I made about it). Wikipedia page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra and there's even a photo of my work there (look for the most crypt-like building). Things of interest you possibly won't find by rudimentary internet searches- Lifeline booksales. Started out yearly, and is now every 2-3 months. Lots of 2nd hand books in large halls (Albert Hall now too small, it occurs at Exhibition Park mostly and other convention areas). There is a big book reading community. Computer Fairs. Every 2 weeks. Likewise a lot of geeks in Canberra. Summer Nats. Yearly car lovers festival, lots of alcohol and noisy engines. Building works - ever since we got local government (in the last 5-10 years) we've had non-stop construction of some sort or other - half is roadworks. Interestingly there are height restrictions on buildings in canberra, our CBD (asside from the heritage listed buildings that can't be modified) has no skyscrapers at all. Legends (I highly recommend finding a copy of "Macabre Canberra" if you can) - the caves under Black Mountain (on which Black Mountain Tower now resides) used to harbour a bushranger. - the local mortuary at one stage emptied out into Lake Burley Griffin - like Washington D.C. in the USA, Canberra has a high suicide rate. This is greatly downplayed in the media. - there are more shops and movie theatres than can be supported by the local populace, even though the average income in Canberra is the highest in Australia (due to the heads of government mainly). Locations of interest Malls - Tuggerranong Hyperdome, Woden Plaza, Westfield Belconnen, Gungahlin Shopping Plaza, The Canberra Centre, Brand Depot Lakes - Lake Ginninderra, Lake Burley Griffin (designer of Canberra), Lake Tuggeranong, Gungahlin Lake.

Thanks for the info on the great locales and for the karma point as well. It's kind of neat to imagine the Doctor and company in a location that isn't London or Cardiff (not that there's anything wrong with either). I guess that's the cool thing about this game. You can create your own episodes with an unlimited budget.

It's interesting that you proposed this idea of running a game set in one's hometown , because I've been thinking about doing this for some time now. The city of Ottawa has a rich history, and I had done a whole batch of research on it while I was running my <i>Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet</i> game. Good to see that someone actually posted this idea. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks their home town might make an interesting setting for a Doctor Who adventure. I think this depends on your players to a certain extent. Our RP group have a Scion campaign still on-going which started off in Stirling, but that was used more as a starting point than a permanent location. When I personally suggested a game set in Stirling, it was said that 'it's fine for short one-offs' but apparently people didn't like the idea of an actual campaign based in their own town.

A group I played with at college had at least one campaign set in the town where we were at university, with the players as characters, for every system they played. If one of them now has a copy of DWAiTaS, you can guarantee that a player somewhere will be finding an old pocketwatch in the back of a drawer that he had forgotten all about.

Ah, but one doesn't have to run a campaign in one's home town, one merely has to run a scenario or three separated by other adventures, set in the home town with some common threads. <evil g>

Indeed. One could say that Series 1 and 2 were such campaigns, with Rose adventuring in her "home town" (the Powell Estates and London) on several occasions.

Ah, but one doesn't have to run a campaign in one's home town, one merely has to run a scenario or three separated by other adventures, set in the home town with some common threads. <evil g> Look at the Rift in Cardiff, Ace's hometown from Sylvester McCoy's era, or Stockbridge from the Fifth Doctor's comic stories - a pretty mundane setting to our eyes, but due to time travel and alien effects it gets rather strange. Perhaps a few adventures set in Stirling now, and in a hundred years' time, then back in Robert the Bruce's era... all featuring the same enemy.

Just looked at what Harrogate has to offer. Goodies include Turkish Baths, a historic spa, a viking hoard discovered in 2007, the hotel Mrs Christie was found at, conference facilities, a nearby US base, numerous annual shows and events, including a crime writer's festival, and not far away, three castles, a roman museum, an abbey, a cathedral and a set of megaliths known as the Devil's Arrows. Not forgetting that in the Pertwee era story "Invasion of the Dinosaurs", when remaining in London became untenable, the government decamped to Harrogate. They do the same in John Wyndham's "The Kraken Wakes."

My current adventure is set in my home town of Brierley Hill in the Black Country, West Midlands, UK. I've set it in the year 1910 when the heavy industry that gave the area it's name was at it's height. There were lots of mines and foundries at this time.
My adventure involves a Silurian base being disturbed by mining in the area. Alas due to a combination of problems (player not turning up, me being ill & another player now on holiday) we're having a 4 week gap in gaming.

Welp.... I live in Bakersfield California. We gave the world Buck Owens and Korn.
We also have a river that's way more deadly than it looks. So far, 270+ people have died in it since they started counting. And we have plenty of 100+ degrees F days in the summer that make sacrifices people want to jump into the river.
