The new incarnation of The Handyman I am working up is a fan of an English football team. I could use some suggestions (being a clueless American and all) of which team he might support and how this might influence his clothing sense Allen EDIT: Decided on West Ham United. Current outfit includes a black sport coat, a West Ham United home jersey, jeans, trainers in West Ham United's colours and of course a football to kick around

Ah too late... I was just going to wax lyrical over the joys of being an Arsenal supporter and you go and choose West Ham!
Oh well, considering their results it will give your character more to worry about when he sees the BBC results show each week ;D

I know you say you've already decided, but may I really, really recommend Manchester United (aka "Man. U."). The reason is that there's a long standing joke about Man U. having more fans not from Manchester than it does in its home town. There was even a TV ad here based on it which ends with some taxi driver in India waving a Man. U. scarf. It would fit the joke to find Man. U. fans on / from other planets. Their colours are red and yellow and he could easily wear a scarf or obnoxious wooly hat in their colours. Also, sophisticated lot that British football fans are, they have a number of football chants they like to use. One of the more cerebral is the one that goes: "Ere we go, ere we go, ere we go / Ere we go, ere we go, ere we go___oh! Ere we go, ere we go, ere we go-oh! Ere we go-oh, Ere, we, go!" (and then it repeats). Also, Wembley is where the FA Cup is held (the big match) hence another common chant that goes: "We're on our way to Wembley. We're on our way to Wembley. We're on our way to Wembley. Wembley!" But that ones a bit complex for a lot of fans. I hope this helps. K.

I was going to say West Ham due to thier nickname of 'The Hammers' and your character being called the Handyman and all. One thing is that they are rarely refered to as West Ham United, just West Ham but personally I would keep the full title as it would be a nice touch to convey the alieness of your character.

Thanks guys! Man U was definitley on the short list, but the Hammers seemed like a good choice, as stated above for their name.

Good to meet someone else with such good taste Just thinking that you could fit a whole football pitch inside a TARDIS; I can see the Handyman now in the stands watching a holo match and cheering on the Hammers, possibly much to the bemusement of his companions, especially if his favorite team is in the 30's era (or 70's or whatever) ;D DW

In one game a character was a werewolf, so the player had his character support one of our local teams, Wolverhampton Wanderers; they're known as Wolves. Considering the player was a strong Liverpool supporter I thought that was good role-playing.

I had thought about that myself, when this thread about English football teams came up, but just can't figure out a plot or situation for my Sunday gaming crew and their Time Lord to deal with something like this. Besides, neither player is into English football, so... An alien could disguise itself as a human and become a football player as a fast route to power and influence. After all, if you had superior physical abilities and wanted to immediately acquire wealth, media exposure and access to the circles of celebrity and media influence, becoming a footballer would be a neat way to do that in the UK (I weep for the nation and all our hard-working scientists and teachers). Alternately, advanced technology could fall into the hands of some young footballer (e.g. cyborg muscles, reflex enhancers) and they instantly get catapulted into football stardom. Maybe they were about to be converted to cyberman status but got rescued at the last minute, leaving them with just a cybernetic heart which never gets tired. Whatever, the Doctor Handyman has to get to him and stop him before he explodes on national TV / hypnotises the nation, gets to meet the Queen (actually, we can spare her), or whatever. The footballer can be villain or victim according to preference.

Hullo, knasser, Welcome to the DW: AiTaS rpg forums! Lots of good folks here, and we're all friendly. The footballer can be villain or victim according to preference. Part of the problem here would be that the alien would have to have been on Earth for some time, as my limited understanding of UK football doesn't lend itself to a belief that a player can just come out of nowhere, literally, and become a star footballer. That said, as I stated, my players aren't into English football, so such a plot would be difficult for them. However, I would love to see this plot written up as a Scenario Seed and posted in the appropriate forum. Might be of use to others.

An alien in disguise with Coordination 7, that could outskill premier-league footballers? All it would need would be a suitably vague backstory and a couple of weeks knocking around some of the local London clubs and he'd be signed up in no time. In fact, the more dubious his backstory the better. He can say he's newly arrived from Mozambique where he used to watch football on a broken old TV and the press would lap it up - the British public loves this stuff. Anyway, it's Doctor Who. This sort of stuff happens all the time. Well it wouldn't have to be focused on football. He could be using the game as a quick shortcut to wealth and media and access to influential people. There could be all sorts of motivations. He could be an alien from a group marooned on Earth, raising money to pay for rare metals. He could be using it as a stepping stone into politics. Imagine if he broke his leg and had to retire after say a few months of glory. He'd get a tremendous boost of public goodwill. If he can be charming and play the role for the media, he could easily make the sidestep into politics. Think the Master, but less manic and without the mind-control, relying on traditional media manipulation instead.

Hullo, knasser,
I obviously don't know enough about the finding of players for English football or the manner of getting into the Premier League and the like to do the concept justice, but I will say that a Coordination of 7 is beyond human, since the human maximum is a 6.

Yes. That is the idea. He is an alien or is technologically enhanced. He has superhuman physical skills. Consequently he can become an elite sportsman in no time. That is the point and the plot-hook.

So in other words, when the press gets a hold of him, presses for his backstory, and finds all sorts of inconsistencies, and that still works? Think of David Beckham or the recent footballer who got storied to heck because of his adultery?

Forgive me, JohnK. But you seem determined to prevent my answering alienshock's question. I did already make a suggestion as to his backstory. I suggested he should be a recent immigrant from a poor country or war-torn country. An asylum seeker, for example. As stated, the British press would love that sort of rags to riches champion. Of course as you point out, such a story wont hold up forever. Which is good. It adds some leads to draw the PCs in and, if you want, some sinisterness to the superstar with the not quite-right. Still it could hold up long enough.

I made the mistake here of thinking in terms of a required verisimilitude for the character's background, but I forgot of course, this *is* Doctor Who we're talking about. So never mind, and carry on.

Also there is the possibility that when someone spots the inconsistencies they assume he's up to no good but he really does just want to play football.
