I keep seeing the reference to Deadlock seals in regards to restrictions on gadgets - what are these? Deadlock seals were largely a plot device to keep the Doctor's sonic screwdriver from opening certain incovienient doors. I would imagine a deadlock seal is something that high technology civilizations typically use as ultra-high security locking mechanisms. Possibly it bonds the molecules of the door or portal to that of its frame, much like a deadlock bolk on a door relies on the strength of the frame to prevent a door from opening. It being a 'seal' I imagine also that its something that completely encompasses the edge of the door/opening.

In the classic series, the sonic screwdriver was also incapable of opening very primitive locks.

IMG, I expanded it to "Restriction: can't open deadlock seals, heavy bolts and other crude devices". I felt it should be something that could come up often enough to make the restriction mean something, rather than a rare opportunity for railroading. So, the sonic screwdriver (actually, a few custom gadgets we had along the same lines) could open a modern lock or a fancy electronic security system, but would fail against a wooden bar or a chair jammed under the handle.

but would fail against a wooden bar or a chair jammed under the handle. Well, that's where companions come in

In the classic series, the sonic screwdriver was also incapable of opening very primitive locks. Yet strangely it could turn primitive screws.

I blame the Doctor - he's obviously always fiddling with it, and occasionally when he "overclocks" the screwdriver it overheats and lapses back/loses functionality
