This was an idea that occured to me the other night after finishing the rules (which are quite good). I have to say of all the things this game does right - it completely drops the ball when it comes to experience and character development.
Here is my preliminary idea and please critique it all you want.
Note: If you spent Story Points on traits they are still spent.
1. Maintain the Story Point Maximum
2. At the end of each session each player recieves 1 Story Point and maybe an additional Story Point if they role-played particulary well). This is regardless of what they spent - so if they had 10 at the begining of a session and they spent 7 at the begining of the next session they would have 4).
Now here is the part I am working out...
3. If one wants to increase his maximum Story Points - he or she must spend 5 Story Points at the begining of the session and his or her maximum will be increased at the end.
4. To increase an attribute (up to 6) it costs in the lowering of one's Story Points the next attribute level. To increase an attribute to 7+ it costs twice as much.
EXAMPLE: If a character had a maximum Story Points of 8 and wanted to increase his or her Ingenuity from 4 to 5 it would result in the lowering of thier maximum Story Points to 3. As stated this maximum can be rasied as in #3.
5. To increase a skill it costs in the lowering of one's Story Points the current skill level. It costs 2 to add an additional Area of Expertise
EXAMPLE: If a character had a Craft skill of 2 it would result in the lowering of of their maximum Story Points by 2 to increase the Craft skill to 3.
These are just ideas more for discussion than anything else but I want to hear from people.
Personally I have always been of the old school that states if one wants to make significant changes to ones character then there has to be a cost. How I would like to see all this work is for there to be a way for characters to increase attributes and skills but not too rapidly and have ther be an opportunity cost associated with it. "If I want to increase my Resolve I am going to have to watch it for awhile because my maximum Story Points are going to be lower".
Just thoughts but what do you all think?
