Rewatching waters of mars I'm reminded how foolish I thought the Doctor was in saving the people of Bowie Base 1. You've all of time and space so why take them home and alter history when you can drop them off anywhere the eye of orion, the city of New . . . New York after the expressway opens, anywhere so they can go on live their lives and history is unaffected. History happens as it say's it happens but the survivors just vanish into history forgotten and uknown.

This always happens when someone on the show dies because history says they died, but when you don't actually see the death.
The Doctor says he can't save Adric because they saw the ship he was on crash that historically had to crash. But there's no reason the Doctor, couldn't have tried to pilot the TARDIS to the ship just before it crashed, whisked Adric away, and everyone lives happily ever after. Except he says he can't.
Just remember that Doctor Who is a TV show and there's no consistent "theory" of time travel. They just make it up. It's only as consistent as they try to make it.

Well to be fair it was Adric so the doctor may have had other reasons to let him plummet to his death.

FYI, and partly related, the old FASA RPG had Adric being rescued by another Time Lord who required an advanced TARDIS for the job. If anyone's interested I can dig out the details.

I thought that was an official novel when he got rescued, also have the feeling he wound up back on the ship in the end.
