Quicksilver ----------- Suitable for present day or future Earth, or a human(ish) space civilisation. It's best set in an urban environment with a large population and a high degree of unemployment or other negative social factors. Can also be used on mining colonies (see the movie OUTLAND, with Sean Connery).
Law enforcement is becoming aware of a new street drug, referred to as "Quicksilver". A metallic liquid, quicksilver can be taken as an inhaled spray, or injected via small ampoules. The effect is one of great calm, almost serenity, while also temporarily increasing the user's strength, stamina, mental acuity and healing speed. Workers take it to increase their productivity and deal with the misery of the daily grind, while others use it to escape the crushing despair of their circumstances. Side effects are a horrible crash when the effects wear off, with some people committing suicide due to the emotional effects, and others becoming psychotic. The drug seems to suppress the emotions, causing them to have greater impact when the drug wears off. Users need to inject larger and larger doses to get the same effect. And then they start going missing...
Quicksilver is a new experiment of the Cybermen, who have combined their neural inhibitor fluid technology with nanogenes to create a new generation of Cybermen. When the level of quicksilver in the bloodstream reaches a certain critical mass, the user finds themselves drawn into the tunnels beneath the city/colony, where the nanogenes exude a metallic cocoon around the user, and leach minerals from the tunnel walls with which to convert the user into a cyberman. Quicksilver has been available for months, and now there are thousands of cybermen beneath the streets, waiting to be activated. Worse, trace amounts of quicksilver have been released into the water supply, meaning that virtually everyone in the city/colony has close to a critical mass of the drug in their systems already.
