Hi, just finished getting setting creation done for my earth-based campaign and I'm going to start preparing over the next couple of weeks for our first session.
A small part of the prep I want to do is putting together some playlists of background music for the sessions, but I don't want to use the Murray Gold music, at least to begin with.
I'm looking for a more retro electronic feel for the tracks and would like to know if anyone has any recommendations?
Sources I'm already considering include: - Aphelion by Allen Stroud - Big Finish Doctor Who OSTs - Disparition - Stranger Things OSTs

Have you considered non-Doctor Who releases by the Radiophonic Workshop or Delia Derbyshire? There are albums from both with music which was never used on any TV programme, though some are pretty hard to come by except for ridiculous prices. Delia's album Electrosonic is particularly useful for tracks of mood music in various settings, but is OOP and hard to find.
There were also a couple of albums of Doctor Who-inspired electronic music released in the '90s by a group called Cybertech, which are ideal background music. The albums were called Cybertech and Pharos. Highly recommended if you can find copies.

Also check out John Baker for 'normal' background retro music

Delia's album Electrosonic is particularly useful for tracks of mood music in various settings, but is OOP and hard to find. Amazon has it available as an MP3 download (with samples of the various songs) for $7.99, and Amazon UK has it also for £7.99. Since it is a digital download, getting it from Amazon US saves you a little ( £5.71 versus £7.99)

There's an awful lot of Tangerine Dream that would fit the bill...

Tangerine Dream is also a good option to explore. Thanks guys!

Another name to look up is Wendy Carlos, she was a pioneering electronic music creator in the 80's and she did the music for the original TronYou also might want to check out The Free Music Archive which has tons of music you could use.

The BIG FINISH OSTs are often excellent - quite long and 100% Whovian, usually with a significant "retro" feel. When running my games, I always use the following mix of sources:
- Big Finish OSTs and New Who soundtrack
- Movie OSTs appropriate to the atmosphere / period / setting of the episode (and this can vary A LOT from one episode to another: sci-fi, horror, historical etc.)
- Specific "dedicated themes" for recurring villains (for instance, for the Porphyrs, a race of psychic vampires who looked like the Pau'an from the SW universe, I used various titles from the HELLRAISER OSTs by Christopher Young)
I rarely use SONGS, except to evoke a specific historical era (such as, say, the 1980s or the 1930s etc.).
