FINALLY! A woman! I'm not as familiar with Jodie in particular, but good for you, Doctor Who!

Yay. I'm quite excited for all of this and I look forward to seeing how the 13th Doctor does in her run. Do we know what the final costume is or has that yet to be revealed?

From the evidence of Broadchurch, she certainly has the acting chops. Well done, Chris Chibnall - a female Doctor won't be a universally popular decision, but the key thing is to have a good actor in the role!

So that is the final costume? Hoody trench coat, I like it. I see it being a fall-back cosplay when people don't have any money, just find a hoodie and a trench coat and bam! Instant 13th Doctor cosplay

I suspect that won't be her regular costume. It feels like it was just meant more to disguise her for the reveal than serve on the show. Remember that first photo of Matt Smith looking all Twilight-y? Or the photo of Capaldi with the scarf? I think this whole reveal ad is just an expanded photo shoot to tease her arrival and has nothing to do with the actual next series.

She confirmed in an interview that its not her costume. (I figured as much given that its basically just Capaldi's costume).

And after 45 years of watching Doctor Who, I am DONE!
Congrats to the PC Millenials at the BBC and the noob fanbase for wrecking the show and taking a huge crap on a 50 year tradition.

And while we are at it, let's gender switch James Bond and Sherlock Holmes because it's "overdue" and "about time" as well. Sorry, but no. It's NEVER "overdue" or "about time" to wreck any franchise in the name of Political Correctness.

After reading other boards for most of the afternoon and evening I have to say it's rather staid over here. And welcome. If these two trailers are what's to go by in series 11 I say bring it on. Sharp picture, great music, eager tension and a gorgeous primary actor. Good luck Jodie, you're looking fab and can't wait to see more. Good luck to Chris Chibnall too. I'm looking forward for his take on the universe. Roll on 2018!

Well I must say I'm really of two minds on this one... It's true that the show needed a big change, a fresh start etc. It's been 12 years now since it's been revived and the worst that could happen to a show like DW would be to become predictable and repetitive. I've really no objection about the whole "gender switch" thing in itself but I'm a bit worried about the REASONS for which this change was made - judging from the last two years of constant campaigning it's obvious that this decision was made mostly to satisfy the part of the fandom cigarman has called the "PC Millenials" - whereas, ideally, this decision should have been made because it's original, new or refreshing and certainly not because it's "about time" or "long overdue". That being said, when the heat dies down, the "whys and wherefores" of the decision won't matter much - it's the stories, the acting, the ideas that will make (or break) the next season(s). But in making this move, the BBC has set a precedent and runs the risk of having painted the show into a corner, so to speak. Personally, I think that now the switch has been made, ALL the next Doctors should be played by women. I'm serious. After all, the "male model" has had his whole cycle of 12 generations - even 13 if you count the War Doctor, so the idea of a female Doctor as the "new paradigm" of the series does seem to make sense. Otherwise, every next regeneration will run the risk of turning into some kind of identity politics lottery, with various factions of the fanbase making demands about "long overdue" identification with their own image etc. And if the Doctor should ever revert back to, say, a "white male" actor, then you can be sure that we'll be drowning in comments like "ah, this is white male chauvinism back in power". So yes, in itself, this is an interesting change - but one that somewhat burns the bridges for future incarnations (but after all, why not?). As the previous poster put it, BRING IT ON!

So, do we add an "Extracanonical Whittaker" sourcebook into projects list? I know it's early, but it's a given there will be books and comics by this time next year.

I honestly have no idea why some folks are blaming the millennials for a female lead on the show...I've been watching the show for over 40 yrs myself...and I Remember how amazed we were. IN THE 80's!!! that Peter Davidson had gotten cast as Tom Bakers replacement ((there had been AGES of talk at the time that we might have gotten our first female doctor even WAYYYYY BACK THEN....so this is NOT a :PC Millennial " thing...it really isn't.. heck I've been expecting one every other doctor since Peter Davidson's time.. Not familiar with broad church or Jodi Whitaker..but i definitely look forward to finding out how this doctor does.... I'll say this...as a 50 something "old guy" im more happy with THIS decision than i was initially with Matt Smith....((though i will admit he did eventually grow on me.../grin.
PS.. ive only seen the "reveal " video posted at the top..someone mentioned "two trailers"? if somone would be so kind as to post a link to the second offical trailer that would be awsome..(ussuly i go go googling for "offical trailers " and end up going throuh a bunch of fanmade stuff before finding the real thing).. thanks.

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but I saw the announcement. First, let me give Jodie my full congratulations and wish her best of luck on her journeys through time and space. However, I'm going to hold my breath until we see the new Doctor in action. Chris Chibnill said that it wasn't going to be a "gimmick" so I have no reason to doubt him for now. But like I said, we'll wait until next year to see this new Doctor in action before we pass judgement.

To be honest, you'd have to be living on the far side of the Moon not to hear about this elsewhere way before the Christmas episode airs. Classifying it as a spoiler here would just stifle any mention in other areas of the forum.

Ding Ding! All change!
I would've been more surprised if the BBC hadn't announced an actress playing The Doctor on Sunday given the precedent set during the last couple of seasons with Missy and the Gallifreyan whose name escapes me.
I've watched Dr Who for several decades now, started with John Pertwee, caught up with some of the 1st and 2nd Doctors' stories when the BBC still showed them on weekday evenings. I've always considered Tom Baker to be my Doctor but I've usually been impressed by the take whoever they've cast has brought to the role. Capaldi was, for me, a little too well-known, a lot too Malcolm Tucker, to really make the part his own but there were moments where he had me convinced.
More important for me at this pivotal moment is Stephen Moffat officially declaring he's recycled all the ideas he can. The bigger change in the show is the change of lead writer. Now that's a change I'm looking forward to.

Technically speaking isn't she the 14th doctor? William Hartnell (1st doctor), Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor), John Pertwee (3rd Doctor), Tom Baker (4th Doctor), Peter Davidson (5th Doctor), Colin Baker (6th Doctor), Sylvester Mcoy (7th Doctor), Paul Mcgann (8th Doctor), John Hurst (9th Doctor at least of the reveal he didn't actually blow up Gallifrey), Christopher Eccleston (10th Doctor), David Tennant (11th Doctor), Matt Smith (12th Doctor), Peter Capaldi (13th Doctor) and then her? I mean John Hurst had more show time as the 9th doctor than Mcgann did as the 8th even if he didn't get his own season/s.
I'm honestly less bothered by a female Doctor and more by the fact I've seen posts/newspaper headlines hailing her as the first feamale timelord leaving aside Missy what about Susan, Romana, the Rani and the other medium part female time lords like the judge at the 6th doctors trial?
The reveal wasn't bad but I'm not sure how I feel about the magically appearing key the show seems to be going less and less science fiction based and more fantasy still we'll see.

I honestly have no idea why some folks are blaming the millennials for a female lead on the show... I've seen a lot of 'ragequit' responses all over the internet blaming PC (Political Correctness) and Millennials for this, when in fact it was the new showrunner's idea - Chris Chibnall - to have a female Doctor. He says in an interview that he went to the BBC and said just this expecting a refusal but they agreed. They said they wanted to take risks.

Technically speaking isn't she the 14th doctor? 15th. Tennant regenerated back into himself. Nonsense. He clearly redirected the regeneration energy OUT of himself and did NOT regenerate. I have abandoned numbering the incarnations of the Doctor. Most of the time, "the Doctor" is sufficient, even if you haven't established which incarnation it is. Or describe who is with him or a memorable scene. "When the Doctor and Shakespeare..." "When the Doctor was in a miniscope..." The most irritating is when people name him as a number. "My favorite scene is when Ten flies his TARDIS along a road to rescue Donna." ARGH!!!
