Among the free gifts with this week's Doctor Who Adventures comic are a pack of Rory's Story Cubes with a prehistoric theme, three dice with a picture on each face. I've not heard of these before, but they're used to generate stories as an informal game. Looking at their website, I see that there's a Doctor Who set due out this month, containing nine dice. I was thinking that they would be helpful in generating adventure ideas - in fact, the blurb on the website actually suggests this as one use. I think the pack of three may be too few dice to get a real feel for their potential. So has anyone used any of the existing sets of Story Dice before? Do you think they might indeed be useful for ideas (or as a story-telling game in its own right)?

Story Cubes are great fun. I have most of the available sets, and I'm dying to get my hands on the new Doctor Who set. They provide the makings for a great storytelling game in and of themselves, but they could also be used during roleplay in a variety of ways, as youv'e noted. I'd heartily recommend Story Cubes for anyone who enjoys roleplaying.

Agreed. Rory's Story Cubes are great for informal story telling and to get the creative juices flowing for scenario design. I own most of the sets as well and the DW set is an auto buy for me.
9 dice is plenty to generate a basic scenario. You can also add additional mini sets for specific flavor and detail.
Highly recommended.

Funny - I just now saw this thread, after having just played Story Cubes "Voyages" with my kids about an hour ago. A Doctor Who set - heck, yes! Where do I sign up?
