I have to admit it... I'm a sucker for encyclopedia, especially where they cover something entirely fictional like comic universes or science fiction. I have owned my copy of Lance Parkin's "A History of the Universe" and the pages are well thumbed. I have this habit of sitting down to do one thing, pick up the History for a quick dip - and only coming back to reality half-an-hour later. So, I was thrilled to find Ahistory: An Unauthorised History of the Doctor Who Universe (Amazon UK link) mentioned in the back of "The Gamemaster's Guide". Didn't even know it existed before then. It's the fourth edition of Parkin's book - and about twice the size in all dimensions! This is a history of the Doctor Who universe from Event One until the end of time. Lance strings together the old series, the new series, Virgin, Telos and BBC books, Big Finish audio, and the comics from Doctor Who Monthly into a coherent timeline (with myriad explanations of how differing sources support or conflict). I love it. I like nothing more than opening it at a random year and follow the trail. It makes for the perfect source of inspiration - taking a thread from a single year or event and spinning it out into a new adventure or just a throwaway comment or memory. I fear having purchased this before Christmas, I found most of the prezzies from Christmas Day struggled to match the book for entertainment value! Paul B

My copy is on order and should be here in the next few days. I also tried to order the other one (Time Traveller's Almanac) but it was out of stock.

I may have complicated matters by referencing Lance Parkin's own introduction. Lance has written four versions of this book, but this is simply an update of the 3rd edition. 'A History of the Universe' - the blue book with the 7th Doctor on the front superimposed over a galactic swirl - was the second edition.
Hope I'm making some sort of vague sense...

AHistory should arrive today, and I just ordered the Time Traveller's Almanac from a place in the UK as Amazon was out of stock on it. My eventual goal is get all the books referenced in the game (and probably a few others as well)

Same here. I should be placing my order for AHistory sometime tonight. Time Traveller's almanac would be nice too.

For those who have not got this publication - get it soon as it may be going out of print. Mr Parkin is more than likely to be working on a version that will take us to the end of the 10th Doctor's era as we speak...

I had the original edition of this, and I have to say, the second has been expanded *considerably*. I also like the fact that Lance Parkin has re-evaluated some of the other articles that he had written for the first edition. For example, his article on UNIT dating is much more in depth and fascinating, and I'm glad he offered up 3 solutions for it, for the reader to choose which they like best.

Got the Time Traveller's Almanac today in the mail..my first ever package from Royal Post It's really interesting, and different from AHistory, which is also really great. TTA concentrates on the new series, although there are mentions of past Doctors and events. Very interesting reading! Allen

If anyone in the UK has an Entertainer store nearly, you should pop in as I picked up a copy of The Time Traveller's Almanac for £3. And 3-packs of Micro Universe minis for £1.25 each - handy if you really need an Auton (heck, I'm going to use The Master figures as Autons, too).

Not sure if there's a more recent thread on AHistory. Just received my fourth edition copy of Ahistory: An Unauthorised History of the Doctor Who Universe and wish to add that these are fantastic! Its truly a work of love for all things WHO attempting to pull the vast content into three volumes.
