THE SCENARIO
2311 the planet Talegorn a colony of the interstellar corporation Woolworths is gripped by fear. 20 years ago the colonists arrived and slowly began to make the world their own much as they have done to others however this time they seem to have stirred something up. The colonists cower in their beds at night trying to obey the rules they have learnt through bitter experience.
1) Don't leave the bed.
2) Don't look out the window.
3) Never, ever, under any circumstances leave the house.
Because it comes in the wolf's hour, the fleshripper that feasts on those who break these rules. Regardless of rank, skill or preparation all who have done so have wound up dead. Nothing left behind but their skin and some splattered blood. Attempts to call for help have yielded little result as the costs of packing up an entire colony and evacuating them are too great, only a few of Woolworth's top scientists and an elite group of marines have arrived to investigate and solve the problem.
WHATS REALLY HAPPENING
Colonization costs are steadily growing as suitable i.e. earth like worlds are getting harder and harder to find. However there are a number of marginal worlds that have not been colonized due to inappropriate conditions. Too cold, too much water, too hot, poisonous atmosphere and yet many of them are rich in natural resources that could be harvested if the costs of specialized equipment weren't so great.
So the Woolworths corporation has turned to another option instead of adapting the planet to the colonists they wish to adapt the colonists to the planet and Talegorn is their test bed. They are seeding the colonists food and drink with various chemicals to induce a change. Once the routine medical checks for any new planet pick up the right markers they arrive that night and trigger the final metamorphosis to the colonists new form using a gas based delivery system. As the result of this the poor colonist tears out of their own skin into their new suitable form. Many however don't survive the trauma but there have been successes so its only a matter of time before the process is perfected.
The scientists and marines sent to "investigate" where actually running the experiment from the start in collusion with the colonies top administrators who were promised promotions and relocation to a more prestigious (and profitable) world. When the colonists started demanding help they moved their spaceship to the main spaceport to reassure the colonists all that could be done was being done.
NEW COLONIST TYPES
Just a couple of the adaptations being done to the colonists for different environments, I leave the descriptor vague so you can come up with your own preferred idea of how they look.
Aquatic
Alien, Alien Appearance (Fishmen), Alien Senses (Sonar), Armour Minor (Tough hide for deep sea diving), Environmental (Underwater).
Heavy Gravity
Alien, Alien Appearance (Fur covered yeti like creature)
Cold Weather
Alien, Alien Appearance (Anthropomorphic animals), Environmental (cold weather).
Hot Weather
Alien, Alien Appearance (Anthropomophic animals)
Mountainous
Alien, Alien Appearance (Spiderlike), Climbing, Special (can make webs), Environmental (Underwater).
They largely look like animals adapted to the environment e.g. fish for water, spiders for climbing as that's the basis for their new forms however Woolworths is on the look out for alien species who may well be better suited. For example they tried very hard to get ahold of DNA from the sea devils because that's an already aquatic race.
WHAT THE PLAYERS NEED TO DO
Investigate, find out the truth of what is happenging here and help the colonists overcome the trained soldiers to prevent the experiments continuing. All without winding up victims of the process themselves.
NOTABLE INDIVIDUALS
Colony Adminstrator
M.B Lee: An older asian gentleman in charge of running the corportion who is driven by desire for greater power and authority. He has no remorse and guilt over the deaths and imprisonment of the colonists under his care as it furhters his own goals but is highly loyal to those he considers his own men and would do all he can to protect them.
Colony Head
Sarah Nicholby
An elderly woman of caucasian descent. Has no official position in the colony adminstration but is greatly respected by the colonists themselves and often acts as an organiser and first point of contact for the colonists when they wish to raise issues. Is physically frail and weary after decades of acting in this role but has too strong a sense of duty to lay it aside especially in the current crisis. Has even gone out alone at night several times with a camera to try and find out what is going on.
Head of the scientific team
Professor Cardsworth
An english scientist who sees people as either important or useful based on what they can do for him. The higher levels of the Woolworth corporation are important becuase of the resources and options they make available to him not because of any rank while the colonists are only useful as parts for his great experiment. Even though Woolworths was genuine in its promise to Adminstrator Lee as far as he's cocerned if Lee ever stops being important for the pacifying effect he has on the colonists he can be used like anyone else. His goal is not wealth, power or fame its simply to see if a challenge can be overcome.
Head of the marines
Captain Fitzgerald
A red headed, well presented soldier who has become very cynical and while aware of what is being done to the colonists is quite happy to help subdue and extrac the successfully altered ones as well as clearing up the mess because frankly its the same everywhere. The wealthy make the rules and the rest just plod along without ever achieving anything.
Head of the Colonie's police SWAT.
Officer Parker
A very tall, muscular bald man who has always dreamed of pushing himself to the limits in glorious combat against powerful foes. He is unaware of the truth of what is happening to the colonists but takes his failure to find and engage what is doing it as a personal insult and the fault of the men under his command since they never wanted to be anything more than regular officers and are ACTUALLY afraid the they will run into the cause rather than seeking it out. Accompanied Sarah Nicholby several times as "protection" although in truth if they had run into something he would have been more likely to try and fight it than to ensure her safety.
