There was a fad, starting in the Victorian era, for taking photographs of the dead, often deceased family members and especially dead children, given high infant mortality of the period. They were often posed, frequently with living family members of pets. Sometimes their pictures were 'enhanced' by the photographer, for example by painting in open eyes.
I'm not sure how exactly to work this into a scenario, but there's something there.
