Best season opener in years. Best episode in years. I've been saying for ages that they needed to bring back two-parters to get the pacing right.

What an opener indeed. I mentioned last year I thought that 'Listen' lacked a lot of the gravitas that it should've brought with it. This one not only makes up for that, but also makes up for following up on important dilemmas that were missed out on in 'Let's Kill Hitler' and (obviously) the big question of whether or not killing someone is worth it for the greater good. I don't believe the Doctor can give Davros the satisfaction of finishing him as a child, because I think he knows that's just what Davros wants to happen deep down. He wants to prove that The Doctor does have it in him to commit genocide on someone before they know their crimes. I don't know how he'll do it, but I know the Doctor will find another way. He always does.

The look of fear on Missy's face when she realised where they were was priceless.

Fantastic!
The sense of history, the Master being the Master, the lead up and the Doctor's own ridiculousness... Definatly one of the better episodes out there. Loved it.
When I heard the rumours that the series might be dropped because people didn't like the new Doctor, I said that it would pass, that while Series 8 was a little shaky, that it was just nerves and it would go away once it went back on air. This will go a long way to proving me right.

Excellent, strong first episode. I'm very excited for the second part. I was a huge fan of Series 8, but this was awesome. I feel weird about truly assessing it until I've seen the next episode.

Pretty much. Hence why I called [REDACTED] on the rumours that Series 9 would be the end of the new Who.

What most surprised me about this episode was just how unabashedly it depended upon continuity from the classic series. After nine long series, New Who has finally embraced its past on screen. This is a wonderful thing and, as we all seem to be saying, it seems to be a harbinger of great things to come. Far from predictable, this episode kept me guessing every step of the way, and you can bet I was on the edge of my seat. This was an excellent start to the season.

But is this a good thing? The viewing figures aren't great.

I don't think the viewing figures can be related to the continuity links, as the vast majority of the general public would have been unaware of this before watching the episode (well, other than Missy and the Daleks, of course).
I actually think it's a combination of Doctor Who being up against The X Factor and the mixed reception that Series 8 had. Hopefully there will be a large uplift in the final viewing figures from those who recorded and those who will watch on repeats and iPlayer. I anticipate (hope) that the final figures will be above 7m and that most viewers enjoy the episode enough to stick around for the rest of the series.

I cheered when Clara was zapped. Sadly, I know it won't be permanent.
Moffat is still writing navel-gazers. Nothing new to see here.

Missy for the next companion!
(How awesome would it be for her to adventure with the Doctor and him having to keep her from killing people to impress him.)

My wife & I did too, but I am pretty sure that it's been confirmed that this is her last season. I could be wrong, tho. While Moffat's stuff is becoming predictable (& I'm tired of his companions), Missy/Master is great, & I really enjoyed this episode.

Jenna Coleman will be departing Doctor Who at some point this season. I for one will miss Clara. For me she has blossomed with Capaldi in a way she never did with Smith. It always felt before as if she was just filling in for Amy, and now she seems to have become her own person. Given there was more of a spark to Victorian Clara and Oswin Oswald, it felt before that modern Clara just wasn't quite fully baked yet. But with Capaldi she became more fully cooked. I shall also miss having a companion who is as good a liar as the Doctor.

I found it an okay episode. Loved the Davros backstory bit but not keen on rock star Doctor. I liked him better as the grumpy old throwback to the 1st Doctor he was in the previous series.
