Here's a piece of news I've been eagerly waiting for from Big Finish! The Third Doctor Adventures Volumes 02 and 03!This time with no narration, which is a bonus. I really enjoyed the first volume - Tim Treloar gives a very good performance as the 3rd Doctor, not identical but close enough for me, and the stories really captured the feel of the 3rd Doctor's era. It's going to be a long wait until November though!

A selection of Big Finish audios are now available on Spotify, including the first 18 stories in the main Doctor Who range plus a smattering from the 4th Doctor Adventures, 8th Doctor Adventures, Lost Stories, Destiny of the Doctors series and several spin-offs such as Bernice Summerfield, Dalek Empire, Jago & Litefoot and Iris Wildthyme. Also available are stories from some of their other ranges, including The Avengers (the 1960s TV series), Dark Shadows, Sherlock Holmes and Blake's 7.

Just started looking at them I'm not really interested in companion stories right now but what would people recommened purchasing as a good first audiobook or two featuring any of the doctors?

Just started looking at them I'm not really interested in companion stories right now but what would people recommened purchasing as a good first audiobook or two featuring any of the doctors? Of the titles available on Spotify, The Spectre of Lanyon Moor is a very good, traditional monster story; both The Marian Conspiracy and The Fires of Vulcan are excellent historicals; and if you want something a bit more out of the ordinary, The Holy Terror is consistently near the top of Big Finish polls. Beyond those on Spotify, I highly recommend Spare Parts and Loups-Garoux, both written by Marc Platt. The Kingmaker is a comedy take on Richard III and Shakespeare, while Son of the Dragon is a much grimmer historical. The Natural History of Fear is very much an experimental piece of storytelling and one of my favourites in the entire range (though it's not to everyone's tastes). I also have a soft spot for The Magic Mousetrap, which is a darkly bizarre story full of odd characters.

A bittersweet moment with today's release of The War Doctor volume 4 from Big Finish. While the series hasn't really depicted the Time War with much imagination (for most of the time, it's seemed more like a conventional space war), it gave John Hurt a chance to reprise the role of the War Doctor - sadly for the final time.
Incidentally, he can also be heard in Big Finish's adaptation of The Invisible Man, also released this month and hugely recommended.

News of this seems to have crashed Big Finish's website: That's no wonder then. I don't get the absolute frothing hatred towards Rose but that's a story for another time. I'm quite looking forward to this however but when I read the list of stories, one of them made me pause for a moment. Sword of the Chevalier seems like quite an interesting choice for a historical figure for the Doctor and Rose to meet. Chevalier D'Eon would be the third transgender character in the franchise (the other two being the evil trampoline Cassandra and debatably a horse). While Bethany Black was in Doctor Who she didn't play a trans character and was overall wasted as a generic clone in Sleep No More.
Another thing to keep in mind is that as a historical figure, D'Eon may not have seem themselves using the modern lens of gender identity and so god knows what they Identify as. The whole thing about being a spy is also a complicating factor. Overall I'm optimistic about this story but it could become a dumpster fire just as easily. One warning sign was the discrepancy between pages. On the trailer page, D'Eon's pronouns are He but on the Product page they're She.
I'm probably making too big a deal out of this but representation is important and the Whoniverse is sorely lacking in the T part of LGBT, and when you're competition is a trampoline and a horse things can only go up from there.

Interesting comments. I see that Big Finish have cast Nickolas Grace as the Chevalier, so not somebody whose voice normally sounds ambiguous as to gender. EDIT: Though having listened to the trailer now, it sounds like he's pitching his voice a little higher than I remember (if that's him talking about a duel, that is).

In less civilised forums, maybe. I don't recall Cassandra being transgender, but it's a long time since I watched either of her stories. Even beyond the TV series, I don't remember any transgender characters - I wouldn't be surprised if there were one or two in the Virgin novels, but none that spring to mind. Given the number of gay, lesbian and bi characters in the new series, it does seem an odd omission.

With Cassandra it's a blink and you'll miss it line in 'End of the World' where she refers to herself living when she was a little boy. As far as I know, last time I checked, the only other trans 'character' is a former love interest of Jack's who's mentioned off headedly. These three characters are all written by Toby Whithouse to be honest their transness is kinda treated as a joke.
I'll reserve judgement on Sword of the Chevalier until it comes out but we'll see. Oh and they seem to have corrected the pronouns on the trailer page which is always nice.

Come to think of it, they could re-make the lost stories...on screen. Someone please make it happen. The Dalek Masterplan...how amazing...

I remember reflecting on this when An Adventure in Space and Time first aired. I think this cast, this set-up presents a real opportunity. They need to continue to explore creative options with regard to the restoration or recreation of the lost stories.

Hi All,
I recently came across Big Finish's Doctor series. I checked out the "Doctor Who: The 4th Doctor Adventures - Philip Hinchcliffe Presents Volume 01" via Hoopla and purchased the 8th Doctor's Doom Coalition series on the Big Finish App. Both series are very well done.
For those strapped on funds, I'm able to stream many previous published audios via the public library on Hoopla (approx. 50+) for free and do intend to purchase more series not currently available on Hoopla in support of the content. Thinking about getting The Collected War Doctor's Series or the 8th Doctor's - The Time War Series that's in production (series 01 is currently out).
Bumping up the thread with a positive review for anyone new or not familiar with Big Finish.
Cheers, Raz

Thinking about getting The Collected War Doctor's Series or the 8th Doctor's - The Time War Series that's in production (series 01 is currently out). If you enjoy those, I'd also recommend The War Master box-set, which ties in with Gallifrey: Time War. Derek Jacobi is as superb as ever! And if you liked Doom Coalition, the Eleven returns in Ravenous, a new series of 8th Doctor box-sets. The first was released earlier this month and also features a new version of the Kandyman (which more closely matches the description of him in The Happiness Patrol's original script). I think the Eleven is one of my favourite Doctor Who villains. He's played so chillingly by Mark Bonnar!

Probably not the audio series that anyone was really asking for, but Big Finish have announced they're bringing back the short-lived teen spin-off Class, with six new stories due out in August: Class Returns!I thought the TV series deserved better than to be cancelled after only one series, and at least this might give us a resolution to the cliffhanger ending of the final episode - though it appears that these releases will be set during the first series, rather than follow on from it. Maybe if they prove successful and BF commission a second batch, we could have series 2?

Maybe if they prove successful and BF commission a second batch, we could have series 2? I'm of two minds about this. On one hand I'm a bit hesitant since Class didn't seem that appealing to grab my attention when it was on, and I know a lot of people who didn't like it as well. That being said, I'm genuinely shocked that we're getting a modern-Who-set story featuring Ace! I have always said that one of the best Who stories never made was the planned SJA episode that would've featured Ace meeting Sarah and bringing closure to what happened to her between the events of Survival and the 96 TV Movie and why she and the Doctor ultimately stopped traveling together. I won't be surprised if the adventure featuring Ace takes a couple of cues from the unmade SJA story, given what happened to her in Big Finish's Gallifrey: Time War. I think I'll wait to hear more about non-spoiler reviews when it comes out and then ultimately decide whether or not I'd like to listen to it. But for the moment, they do have me at Ace being in a sequel-of-sorts to Remembrance of the Daleks (one of my all-time favorite DW Stories overall).

I listened to these stories last week. It's an enjoyable set and am hoping for news of a volume two. My favourite was the second story, which made good use of the Ood.
I'm enjoying most of the New Series audios that BF are doing now. Tales of New Earth is a particular favourite and is a great example of world building. I've high hopes for the Lady Christina stories due later this year!

I have been very fond of Big Finish's output for years. After all Spare Parts for example is a Cyberman origin story that eclipses and predates any such effort from the tv show. I was rather disappointed that the eighth Doctor sourcebook was unable to cover any of Paul McGann's audios but I guess that was a licensing issue. As I think I mentioned a while back Zagreus is a potentially great NPC.
