In the TV series, we've seen the Doctor and companions stand on the "doorstep" of the TARDIS while in outer space: they can breathe, talk and survive because they are still enclosed within the TARDIS' force field.
Could this force field be extended from an unmoving (landed) TARDIS to cover a much larger area (eg. create an "Earth-like radius zone" on the Moon, for instance)? What are your thoughts on this?

In the classic series, in The Horns of Nimon, the Doctor extended the TARDIS forcefield to form a corridor between the TARDIS and the Skonnan ship in deep space, which he, Romana and K9 were able to safely walk along.
In the new series, in The Parting of the Ways, the Doctor extended the forcefield as protection against being exterminated while on the Dalek ship. I imagine it would also have provided a breathable environment if one had been needed.
So, the short answer is yes. I don't know what the limits on this are - how wide an area could he extend the forcefield to cover?

As misterharry said it seems that the force field can be extended to a degree, though it seems to be fairly limited in the volume encompassed.

Perhaps the expenditure of story points could extend it further.

In The Parting of the Ways, wasn't the force field enhanced with (created by?) the tribophysical waveform macro-kinetic extrapolator?
The nature of the TARDIS's force field has changed a lot with time and with different storytelling needs. Sometimes the TARDIS is said to be indestructible; at other times some explosives seem like they might break through.

Perhaps the expenditure of story points could extend it further. Representing some jury-rigging of systems? Yep. Of course an Atrium circuit would allow the creation of a full scale base outside the TARDIS.

From my TARDIS Technical Index...
The default settings for the force field can be programmed to allow the Main Doors to be safely opened even when the TARDIS is in space. The main Force Field can also act to filter the air if the Main Doors are open. However these fields must be switched off for anyone to exit or enter the TARDIS. Since the Defense Fields for the Main Doors are on a separate circuit it is possible to enter or exit a TARDIS while all parts of the Exo-Shell (except the Doors) are protected. With some difficulty, the field for the doors can be extended beyond a TARDIS's Exo-Shell. This can be used to create a pressurized air shell or corridor with a range of about 10 meters. The force fields can also be reconfigured to generate null-gravity zones around the outside of the TARDIS. The Forcefield can be used to nudge the TARDIS from place to place.
