Three and a half years ago I started with Doctor Who, initially with the new series, and later continuing by exploring the old series. Recently I have a nagging feeling that the storytelling of the Daleks is not consistent or plausible.
While rewatching the new series I recently did the closing two-parter of season four. Wenn all the Daleks exploded by some clever machinations of DoctorDonna and the metacrisis doctor, I scratched my head and thought: Well, that doesn't really fit.
Why? Because the Daleks brought the Time Lords to their knees in the Time War. Remember the panic and destruction and despair on Gallifrey in the 50-years-special?
But time and time again you only need some clever idea to not only defeat the Daleks quite easily and thoroughly, but obliterate them - for the time being. You know, simply reverse some radiation, hook some destructive information on some wavelength, and there you go - all the Daleks and their ships explode.
So, my consistency doubts centre on those two points: The ease of destructing them doesn't make plausible the downright panic the Daleks induce whenever they appear. And how could they bring Gallefrey to its knees, when you only need a metacrisis Half-Time-Lord and a super temp from Chiswick to make them all explode?
What do others think? Do you find the Daleks a plausible threat? And wouldn't it have been more plausible in painting them super villains if in all the Dalek stories the Doctor wouldn't have "obliterated" them time and time again, but rather escaped them by the skin of his teeth?
