That's pretty neat. I hadn't considered novels for the so-called War Doctor. Good move by the BBC. Too bad they can't get John Hurt to play the Doctor for Big Finish—I don't believe their license covers the relaunched series. It's conceivable that the BBC could do their own audio stories with him, though I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
I wonder if there will be a read-aloud version of this, and if they get John Hurt to read it.
I don't know how much of an ongoing series of this I'd like, though: Doctor Who isn't supposed to be about battles and strategies.

I like. Actually a lot of the recent BBC stuff, like the Time Trips series, has been good. Better than a lot of the EDA, PDA and NSA books. Also I second the suggestion for an audiobook read by John Hurt.

Well, it makes a kind of sense that the Daleks would need them at some point during the War.

Fans of the War Doctor wanting another fix will doubtless be interested in this: Seasons of WarIt's a charity anthology of short stories about the War Doctor. Make a donation to the charity (Caudwell Children) to receive a free copy of the pdf version when it's released (the target date is early December). There will also be paperback and special deluxe editions which will be available to order on the week of release. It's unofficial, but will include contributions by a number of professional Who authors: Jenny Colgan, Lance Parkin, Kate Orman, Paul Magrs, George Mann (author of Engines of War), Gary Russell, David McIntee, John Peel, Jim Mortimore, Andrew Smith, Matthew Sweet, plus a host of fan writers and others to be announced. SEASONS OF WAR
From his 'birth' on Karn, until the Moment he ended the Time War, this Time Lord - a Time Lord who used to call himself 'The Doctor' but, no more - a Warrior, a Renegade, travelled throughout time and space, in his trusty old TARDIS, passing through dimensions unknowable and through worlds unimaginable, experiencing horrors like you wouldn't imagine, things you would never believe...
Until now.
Never giving up, never giving in, these are just some of the ADVENTURES of the Time Lord once known as The Doctor. Forced to fight in a war he didn't want, but couldn't avoid. Acting like the man he never thought he would or could be...
Here are just some of his stories...
All of time and space is burning. For every time, there is a season.
For every season, there is a war

Seasons of War early PDF is out, but more importantly so is the short film.
You can find it on YouTube. I'd post a link but my mobile isn't that good.

If anybody's having trouble downloading their pdf copy from the link in the email you should have received, it works if you copy and paste into your browser.
The latest update on the Facebook page says you can still donate to receive the pdf (with a MOBI version to follow), so it's still not too late.

We are starting to get a fair amount of ressource for the War Doctor, unfortunately how much of it is Canon and how much is not, remains to be see.
The Day of the Doctor movie and the short movie "The Night of the Doctor" (as well as the brief Cameo im "The Name of the doctor" "Listen" and "The Zygon Invasion") are definitively Canon.
Other then that we now have: Novel : Engine of War; Short Story : The Shakespeare Notebooks; Short Story : Heroes and Monsters Collection; Anthology : Seasons of War (vol 1); Short Story : Season of War: Rise/Risen Coda; Anthology : Seasons of War (vol 2) - upcoming; Anthology : Seasons of War (Vol 3) - Upcoming; Anthology : Seasons of War: Dispatcher - Upcoming; Comic book Cameo : Dead Man's Hand; Comic book : Four Doctors -upcoming; Comic Book : Time enough for War (Seasons of War comic); Short Film : Seasons of War; Audio/PodCast : The War Doctor Volume 01: Only The monstrous (1 The innocents, 2 The Thousand Worlds, 3 The Heart of the Battle); Audio/PodCast : The War Doctor Volume 02: Infernal Devices (1 Legion of the Lost, 2 A thing of Guile, 3 The Neverwhere) - upcoming; Audio/PodCast : The War Doctor Volume 03: Agents of Chaos - upcoming; Audio/PodCast : The War Doctor Volume 04: TBA - upcoming.
That quite a fair bit indeed.

Let Paul Cornell explain the canon, or well lack of canon, in Doctor Who far better then I ever could. www.paulcornell.com/2007/02/canonicity-in-doctor-who/

I think there's a difference to be made between "canon" (which is entirely personal) and "official" (which is more objective).
"Canon" covers whatever you want it to cover. I don't think the BBC has ever stated their view on what is canonical within Doctor Who, so it's down to the individual.
"Official" stories would be those that have been properly licensed by whoever owns the characters used in them - usually the BBC (but not always - many characters and monsters are owned by the writers).
Things like Big Finish audios and Titan comics are official, but they are unlikely to fall within everyone's definition of canon.
Conversely, the Seasons of War ebook and any potential sequels are not official, but they definitely fall within some people's definitions of canon (well, mine at least - until they're actively contradicted by any official source anyway).
I'm sure there's a Venn diagram to be drawn here...

So "Canon" may not have been the best choise of word, but I guess you understood what I meant. How much of the material can/will be considered the "official" story and how much of it can/will "put aside" so to speak.
I agree that ultimately, it's the GMs call to say what's true or not though.

So "Canon" may not have been the best choise of word, but I guess you understood what I meant. Yeah - sorry, I wasn't intending to be snarky. In terms of the Expanded Universe sourcebooks, we'll definitely be including all the official stuff within our usual guidelines on coverage - something from all the novels and audios, plus a representative sample from the comics and short stories. As for Seasons of War, it's less clear. As it's unofficial, it has more or less the same status as fan fiction. But personally, I'm hoping to be able to convince Siskoid to include a few of the more interesting things from these stories, so we'll see...
