On the Day of the Doctor--23 November 2013--a friend and I launched our first Doctor Who role-playing campaign. The series follows the exploits of the Nth Doctor, that version of the character portrayed by Richard E Grant in the underrated "Scream of the Shalka" (2003). In essence, our campaign's universe diverges from the established canon at a key point during the Eighth Doctor's timeline (following the events of the Big Finish audio "To the Death"). The Time War never occurred and the events of the new series have been negated. The Doctor is as he was in the original webcast, an unwilling puppet of the Time Lords entangled in a web of shadowy temporal intrigue that even he doesn't yet understand. In the TARDIS he is joined by his latest companion, Selene, and a (currently non-functional) robotic duplicate of the Master. I've created a blog to chronicle the events of our campaign. We'll be posting episode guide entries, short fiction, character sheets, artwork, and other game related materials as it continues. There have been two adventures thus far: "Ghost Town," which brought the TARDIS to a haunted funfair in contemporary Britain, and "Contagion of the Daleks," in which the Doctor and Selene fought to prevent the renewal of a devastated Dalek Empire. (The elements that distinguish these particular adventures will be familiar to those well-versed in DWAITAS's excellent game modules, but the names have been changed to avoid spoilers for the uninitiated.) We're having a blast, of course, and we're looking forward to weaving quite the mythology from the threads Paul Cornell established in "Scream of the Shalka." This forum, and the other Doctor Who RPG blogs out there, also serve as a limitless source of inspiration. Have a look into "The Dark Dimension!" I'll be sure to post any interesting developments here as the season progresses. The Dark Dimensiondwaitas.wordpress.com/

This sounds really exciting to me. And I love the look of the blog - the little touches like the Big Finish style covers for each adventure are great and the teasers are fascinating to read. Top notch!

How long did you spend on those two "covers"? At least as long as we spent on the adventures themselves! Each cover takes me several hours. They're essentially elaborate collages. I enjoy it, though. It's fun to try and create something that captures the tone of the series and each adventure.

The Doctor and Selene returned recently in a classic Doctor Who role-playing module... "The Hartlewick Horror"Residents in the sleepy village of Hartlewick are being dragged from their homes in the night. The local constabulary are dumbfounded by the circumstances surrounding these bizarre abductions, but help soon arrives in the form of one Dr. John Smith of Scotland Yard and his plucky young assistant, a pair of investigators as brilliant as they are unconventional. From the halls of stately Cheltenwick House to the druidic burial mounds of Six Leagues Bottom, the Doctor and Selene confront a baffling array of suspects. Each line of inquiry serves to further illuminate the startling history of crime and punishment that has inspired an occult mythology surrounding the demon servants of An-Amon.Following the session, the game master commented that the Nth Doctor really found his character in this adventure. He was in his element hobnobbing at Cheltenwick House and dashing about druidic ruins. It was the vast and varied cast of characters in this module that made it such fun to play, and the game master did a brilliant job of providing each of them with a distinctive voice. Highlights included a thrilling car chase, during which Selene abused a Lagonda whilst fending off attacks from a living gargoyle, and the climax of the adventure, during which the Doctor fumbled in such a way as to accidentally save the world! A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

At long last, the Doctor and Selene have boarded the TARDIS once again and set a course for adventure... "The Origin of Evil"England. 43 A.D. Titus Flavius Vespasian has gone missing and the Second Augustan Legion faces a crushing defeat as its warriors die in waves. The barbarian hordes that oppose them possess uncanny strength and organization. A rogue TARDIS has landed amid this bloody theatre of war and the Roman invasion of Britain has gone terribly wrong. The legionnaires speak in hushed tones of the Sacred Wood of the Britons, the fountainhead of otherworldly evils that has brought chaos to this land and seemingly sealed the fate of the empire. Joining forces with the Emperor Claudius, the Doctor and Selene set forth on an expedition to this fearful place. There, they will face one of the Doctor’s greatest foes, and the terrible secret that she possesses will redefine human history as they know it.This was the "season finale" for our first run of stories. As a result, if offered a dramatic confrontation as well as a tantalizing glimpse of the series myth arc. After the relatively short game was finished, the game master commented that, in its pacing, this was the adventure that most resembled an episode from the new series. There was no time for distractions, just chase sequences and fight scenes and thrills. The historical details of Roman Britain were very rich. (Bonus points for those who recognize which classic Doctor Who module it was based on.) For me, the highlight of the adventure was a scene in which the Rani taunted her captive, the Doctor. The game master, who is quite fond of the character, wrote some stunning dialogue for her. (As you can see, our version of the Rani is portrayed by Gillian Anderson.) The Rani has revealed that the Divinity, a malevolent alien race that have a history of conflict with the Nth Doctor, are not as extinct as previously thought. The Divinity serve as the recurring enemies in our game--our contribution to the great monsters of Doctor Who--and it appears they will be making their presence known in upcoming adventures. This does not bode well for the cosmos, or for the Doctor! As usual, a teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

That would be "Legions of Death" then...(I actually used the Sontarans when I ran my version, and didn't have any history-changing Timelord renegades...) That's the one. During most of the adventure, based on the available clues, I suspected the Sontarans were lurking around every corner, and the set-up for the story gave me every reason to suspect the Time Lords themselves had a hand in these events. Suffice it to say, the Doctor and his companion were genuinely surprised to face the true villain.

Sounds like you've pulled Big Finish's rug from under them, by beating them to introducing a recast Rani - theirs isn't due until the end of the year! It's an excellent choice, and another superb CD cover.

Now I have to live in perpetual fear that one of my characters will be transformed into a tree after stepping on a random mine!

The Doctor, Selene, and the Master each played a role in our latest adventure... "Kingdom of the Cybermen"Lost in time, separated from the TARDIS, the Doctor and Selene find themselves at the centre of a medieval tournament at Tintagel Castle. The knights who carry the banner of King Mark are legend, among them Sir Kahedin and the valiant Sir Tristan. The strength and bravery of these heroes will not serve them, however, in battle against the soulless black knights who arrive at the castle to issue a grim ultimatum: submit for upgrade or be deleted. The travellers recognize these dark figures as modified Cybermen, but there is more at stake than the cyber conversion of Kingdom Kernow. A temporal paradox of incredible power has been created by these events, and the Doctor and his companion are not the only lost souls to have fallen through time.
Many of you will recognize the module, though the game master made a number of interesting modifications to the adventure which significantly strengthened the character relationships. We were thrilled to add a new player to our campaign beginning with this episode. She's playing a new companion, Mohana Sundraju, a royal courtesan from twenty-third century India. This brought a new perspective to the adventure, and it's clear that events would have played out very differently if she hadn't been there to challenge the Doctor and Selene. (A great many knights escaped cyber conversion only because of Mohana's selfless intervention.) The game master himself is playing the robotic Master--with relish, I might add--as a pivotal recurring NPC in the "Scream of the Shalka" mode. For the first half, I had to leave the room for a number of scenes that did not involve the Doctor. The highlight of the adventure was the moment that the two player characters finally found each other face-to-face during a medieval banquet in the great hall of Tintagel Castle. The game master also gave us a tease, a sort of "Next Time" trailer at the finish. Our next story promises to add an epic entry to our ongoing mythology. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure. A character sheet for Mohana will be posted shortly.

Last week, the Doctor, Selene, and new companion Mohana found themselves in a chilling scenario... "Catatonia"At the Majestic, a condemned hotel in north London, the destitute and the dispossessed gather to seek refuge. They share a woeful lifestyle with the stray cats who roam the derelict’s dilapidated halls. When the Doctor, Selene, and Mohana arrive amid the driving rain of a winter storm, they find a people in desperate need of help but unwilling to place their trust in strangers. One by one, the squatters of the Majestic are being subdued, rendered comatose by an unrelenting telepathic force. Struggling to rally this fractured community, the Doctor and his companions witness a terrifying shift in the status quo: as men and women lose their minds, the feral cats of this forgotten place gain in strength and power!
This adventure was a last minute change to our schedule for the series and, as a result, a rather lengthy mythology-based prologue preceded our arrival at the hotel. (We had to make a quick trip back to Arrowdown to track the Divinity!) No points for guessing the source material this time around! The core scenario is a simple one but it is also extremely atmospheric. The setting is rich and the cast of supporting characters very well realized. Throughout the adventure, the solution to the threat was staring the Doctor in the face but he just kept chasing after ever more complex theories. It took bold intervention from our new companion, Mohana, to finally make some progress. Back in the TARDIS, the android Master has begun to sway Selene. There promises to be some serious conflict between the main players before this series is done. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

Are we due another adventure report in the near future? I'm having withdrawal pains waiting for the next CD cover to appear! Yes! You must have the psychic trait, Mr Harry. It's been a long time, I know. The first half of this year was hell on scheduling. Our next adventure, "Divine Retribution," is scheduled for Saturday, August 1st. We're also going to be trading roles, with a new game master taking over soon. This means that there should be a steady stream of new adventures through the end of the year. (We plan to trade roles regularly from here on out in an effort to keep things balanced. The game master will rotate each season, as will the companions as a result.) Things are about to pick up, and there are some exciting developments ahead. Stay tuned.

Richard E Grant's Nth Doctor returned in our most epic adventure to date, the long-awaited... "Divine Retribution"The Divinity. Since the dawn of time, these ethereal heralds have spread evil and chaos across the stars with their promise of religious salvation. An attempt by the Doctor to erase their malign influence from history served only to bring about eternal vengeance. For his sins, there will be retribution.
On the planet Vortis, flowering jungles have become a battlefield for the warring alien armies of a bitter interplanetary conflict—the war between Rhumon Prime and New Rhumos. The fighting has led to the enslavement of the peaceful insectoid peoples of the planet, the Menoptera and the Zarbi. As Vortis is stripped of its remarkable resources and hope dwindles among its indigenous inhabitants, the Menoptera seek a prophet who fell from the stars to save their world during a time of peril long ago: the Doctor.
Fate has returned the TARDIS to Vortis, for the Doctor knows the origin of the religious zealotry and primal superstitions fuelling this war. The Divinity have taken this fertile world as their own and all are powerless to resist their influence. After facing them, even the Doctor’s closest allies find their faith put to the test. How much does Mohana really know about the shadowy figure known as the Doctor? How deep-seated is Selene’s misguided dedication to the Master? The fate of Vortis and the rebirth of the Divinity hinge upon the resolution of a power struggle that has long been brewing behind the battered blue doors of the TARDIS.Our game master did some amazing work on this one, adapting the Christopher Bulis Virgin Missing Adventure Twilight of the Gods (1996) as a module. The result was a game that was fast-paced, remarkably detailed, and featured some top notch drama. For some time now, the mythology of our ongoing campaign has centered on the Divinity, an ancient and evil race created as the dominant original villains of the campaign. The Divinity are designed to deliver the same shudder as the Daleks, the Cybermen, or the Weeping Angels. Possessing an extraordinary psychic influence, the Divinity descend upon worlds and present themselves as angelic heralds. In truth, they use the faith and religious beliefs of the population in an effort to dominate and control them. Each time the Doctor has faced them he has suffered tragic losses. As a result, the Doctor and the Divinity are each dedicated to the other's annihilation. Though their influence has been felt since our first game, this was the first adventure in which the characters went head-to-head with the Divinity, and the ensuing conflict was suitably dramatic. While the Doctor is largely immune to their influence, his companions each found themselves facing a personal crisis of faith. What had been minor character conflicts soon blossomed into outright dissension. Unquestionably, the adventure reached its peak of suspense when Selene, our technologically obsessed mechanic from the sixty-fourth century, pledged her loyalty to the android Master--as the two of them stole the TARDIS, leaving the Doctor and Mohana behind in the jungles of Vortis! Vortis offered a rich backdrop for the drama, and there were so many layers to this plot that any given story thread could easily have formed the basis for an adventure of its own. (We had everything from giant ants to flying saucers to zombies!) The highlights of gameplay came when Selene and Mohana encountered the Divinity for the first time, each experiencing a different religious epiphany catered to their beliefs. There was a lot of laughter to be had when Mohana impersonated a Menoptera by donning one of their moulted shells, and the Doctor found another opportunity to dig deep into his resourceful pockets and make use of a children's toy, this time leaving behind jacks to be used as a trail of breadcrumbs. This adventure was both exciting and fun, and we're looking forward to resuming a regular game schedule as our second series comes to a close. There's no telling how the next adventure will play out, but there will surely be consequences for all involved after this. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure on the blog. A full stat sheet for the Divinity is coming.

This sounds superb! I'd love to know how the Doctor and Mohana recover the TARDIS and what happens between Selene and the Master - was that the cliffhanger at the end of the session? It was pretty thrilling. For a few tense moments, neither the game master nor I knew just how this was going to end! (Aren't those the moments we play for?) After encountering the Divinity, who appealed to Selene's preoccupation with technology and her growing dissatisfaction as a companion, she made a mad dash for the TARDIS, arriving just before the Doctor. Once through the doors, she pledged her devotion to the android Master and asked if he could help her to seize control of the TARDIS. "My dear, I thought you'd never ask," the Master said with a grin. And off they went! They hoped to work together to find a way to seize total control of the craft and then develop a fix for the Master's inability to leave the TARDIS. That was my cue, as the Doctor, to expend some story points and use my sonic screwdriver to fuse the TARDIS controls such that it could not leave the planet's gravitational or temporal orbit. (In my moment of quick decision, I was inspired by the Tenth Doctor's solution to the climax of "Utopia.") Unable to escape Vortis, the TARDIS rematerialized at the edge of an ocean as the tide was rolling in during the final moments of the adventure. The Doctor and Mohana were able to return, and the adventure ended with an enraged Doctor confronting the two would-be mutineers, vowing that Selene's time aboard the TARDIS was at an end. This final scene was so explosive that it will be recounted in the teaser to be posted for our next adventure. Our next is the series finale, and it promises to be Selene's farewell. This unexpected plot development wasn't as messy as it could have been. The game master and I both sensed, as the gameplay unfolded, that we might be painting ourselves into a corner and, in a sense, we played it safe. During our post-game discussion, however, the game master lamented that he hadn't seized the opportunity to make it even more dramatic--by stranding Selene and the Master in the time vortex for a decade or more! That certainly would have brought a whole new level of conflict to our crew. We all decided that the lesson to be learned is that it's best to let things play out as they play out and not to hold back for potential future developments. Generally speaking, I think that's a fine lesson for role-playing.

The Dark Dimension campaign said goodbye to our first original companion in the latest series finale... "Planet of Ghosts"As war rages with the Dalek Empire, the Galactic Union’s border worlds fall one-by-one. Rescued from a Dalek death trap by a motley band of bounty hunters, the Doctor, Selene, and Mohana witness the devastation of the fighting first hand as refugee fleets burn and whole planets are incinerated. A violent clash aboard the mercenary starship itself leaves Selene frozen in cryonic suspension, her life hanging in the balance, as the bounty hunters who saved her ruthlessly secure a captured Dalek. Though subjected to cruel torture, the mutant captive responds only to the voice of its most hated enemy: the Doctor. Dalek military movements in the sector, it reveals, centre around a single strategic point in space and time. Following this lead, the Doctor and companions both new and old soon find themselves deep beneath the surface of Arkheon, the fabled Planet of Ghosts, where the Daleks have begun construction on a device of staggering scope and power. If activated, it has the potential to alter the very timeline of the war. The Doctor and his allies must risk all in a desperate bid to free the prisoners of the Daleks and end their dangerous operations on Arkheon, or the human race will be exterminated once and for all.Our game master has become quite adept at adapting novels into full-blown modules. This installment was adapted from Prisoner of the Daleks (2009) by Trevor Baxendale, allowing the Nth Doctor and his companions to face the scourge of Skaro once again! Our game master pre-records all essential Dalek dialogue using an appropriate voice modulator, which is fantastic. Everyone at the table perks up the moment you first hear an echoing "Exterminate!" Prisoner of the Daleks features some incredible settings and a strong supporting cast. The Doctor proved to be the real prisoner in this game, utterly failing again and again to escape from a Dalek prison camp, despite multiple attempts. (It was a bit embarrassing, to be honest!) It took some fancy maneuvering with the TARDIS--and a bit of help from a pile of World War I era dynamite--to bring about a suitable end game. This was Selene's final adventure. She spent much of it cryogenically frozen--which seemed apt, given the Doctor's feelings towards her at this point in the mytharc, following her betrayal. In the end, it was Mohana who offered some poetic last words and a heartfelt goodbye to the character. Our next series of adventures will begin in a month or so, beginning a rotation. A new game master will be taking over and, as a result, the timeline will jump forward and there will be a new (though familiar) companion stepping into the TARDIS. More on that when the time is right. As usual, a teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the latest adventure.
