Let's have a little wager. I'm hoping for the bookies' current favourite, Peter Capaldi.

Let's pretend I've been avoiding spoilers. Your topic title just informed me that Matt Smith is being replaced. Matt leaving was an official BBC annoucement and has been all over the news, as it will be again next week. Anybody really not wanting to know until Christmas would have had to take themselves off to the North Pole without any means of contact with the outside world.

Let's pretend I've been avoiding spoilers. Your topic title just informed me that Matt Smith is being replaced. I hope you are not baiting Admin into an illogical and unnecessary argument again. I find it difficult to believe you don't know this news so the validity of your comment is kind of dubious to me, and believe me, I've been moderating on various Fora for a long time now so I have zero tolerance for any kind of BS, no matter what it is or how Semantically cleverly it is concealed. I don't like the sarcasm of your post either.
I know what happened in the past with another spoiler complaint you made and how over-graciously Admin handled it. I would hate to think that, based on this, and the previous argument, you were again exploiting Admin's graciousness for your own amusement.
News of Matt leaving cannot be classed as a spoiler. It's commonly known information that has been openly publicly available for months, everywhere in magazines, newspapers, TV, radio, web sites, fan sites, forums, social media sites and by no means least, an official global press release from the BBC.
If this is the place you saw this news first and it pissed you off, well, that's unfortunate for you if you’ve been living in a closed media bubble, but unless you don't read or view magazines, newspapers, TV, radio, other web sites, fan sites, forums and social media sites, you would have discovered this news sooner or later.
I should warn you, if you consider open, official show news as 'spoilers' then you will continue to be spoiled by visiting this forum, and many others too, so the best of luck with that.
In that case my advice would be to avoid this forum, because we will always feature common news items concerning the show.

I, myself, wouldn't entirely mind a female Doctor. I mean, we are nearing the end of his supposed 13 life span, and female regenerations have been confirmed, I don't think it would hurt to get one good female out of it. Whoever the actress would be, though, she would have to be extremely good to be able to sell it to the fans.
Come on, guys! If you had to choose a female actress (preferably British) to portray the Doctor, who you you choose?
The only one that comes to my mind at the moment would be Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame. She would also shatter the record for youngest actor to play the Doctor.

It won't end with 13 incarnations, though. Obviously. When the time comes, the BBC will use the special backup plan that Moffat has previously laid out in detail.
That is, they will make something up.
Y'know, just like they did with the very first regeneration. The show has quite a history of changing the rules, after all.

While I'd like a female Doctor - I'm very much in favour of maintaining a male action hero that isn't violent. Just because he's the only one.
My money - what about Benedict Cumberbach?

I would love to see Benedict as The Doctor, or even just in the show as anyone at all, really. It was wonderful hearing him in that one Big Finish audio (Forty-Five, wasn't it?), but it'd be fantastic to have him show up in an episode. Additionally... I'm not at all sure why, but for some reason I can't help but picture James McAvoy when I think of Twelve...

My money - what about Benedict Cumberbach? No! This must be prevented at all costs! If Cumberbach becomes the Twelfth Doctor, then he will have successfully cornered three separate fandoms! Sherlock, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. Such power will lead to a "Fandom Singularity", drawing all fandoms toward his stardom. At that point, Cumberbach will appear in all TV shows, movies, and possibly even book series at once! Theoretically, it might come to a point where he portrays all characters, at all time, possibly retroactively as well. At this point, Cumberbach will rule the world and all will worship him. Though some people may be okay with this, I am not okay with a world ruled by one (albeit incredibly handsome and talented) British person. If it were David Tennant however... In all seriousness, though, Cumberbach wouldn't be a bad choice, though I feel he has enough on his plate being Sherlock at the moment.

So those betting on Cumberbatch were backing the right character from the wrong version of Neverwhere...

Well, I was genuinely surprised. I think he's a great actor and he will make a really good Doctor. It's about time we got a mature actor into the role, more in line with the classic series.

I didn't quite expect the announcement so soon. Maybe it comes from living on the other side of the pond, but I'm not familiar with Capaldi's work. I do think that having an over-50 actor in the role for the first time in decades will be a nice change from the last couple of Doctors, though. I'll look forward to the regeneration scene and to seeing Capaldi make the role his own next year.

Change... and not a moment too soon.
Or something.
Great choice, might change things around a bit. An older actor with a new take is certainly welcome.

I was blown away when they revealed Peter Capaldi, honestly wasn't expecting it to be someone I'd heard of before. And I agree, it's good to see an older Doctor again.

I first saw him on Neverwhere, but remember him most from Children of Earth (rather than the Pompeii Who episode) - in Torchwood he really had great believability as his character, and great empathy.

For me, he'll always be the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It! Behind the bullying and bluster, there was a finely judged pathos and desparation to the role in the last series. I hope that Peter's casting in Doctor Who doesn't mean that's the last we've seen of Tucker!
My wife and I saw him on stage in last year's excellent West End production of The Ladykillers - he was superb as Professor Marcus and gave a humourously creepy performance.

Great choice I think. As for The Thick of It, they'd already announced they'd be no more episodes
