I'd read someplace, years ago (I think it was in Doctor Who magazine) an interview with one of the show's producers that Kate O Mara was once considered to play The Master but then they settled on a male role. Can anyone back me up on this? Not much info online... This could make for an interesting reboot or alternate reality campaign. Here's Kate from 1970. Think of how different the dynamic would have been!

I've not heard this before. If correct, I would suspect it would have been during the 1980s rather than when the Master was introduced in 1971.

Nope it was definately for the original appearance in 1971. Certain of it.

It's strange how she looks so different when she was younger...

This is becoming quite an appealing idea. I've been re-imagining the Third Doctor's exile on Earth and while I am one of the biggest Pertwee and Delgado fans on this planet I can't help but feel my mind boggle a little bit under the concept of Kate being cast as the Master in 1970. The chemistry (and no doubt the show's ratings!) would have been very different. This pic sealed it for me:

I might have to consider this idea if I ever get around to running a game of Doctor who. Recasting the original show and its stories has always been something I have one to do as a way to make it my own in some ways. But there are certain things and characters I would not change most of the doctor's regenerations would be the same except maybe Peter Davidson as I thought he was okay but a little snooty. And would possibly expand Colin Baker's time as the doctor and I always liked him and he has potential for a good campaign as does Paul McGunn. And one of the things I would like to do with The Rani is have her regenerate into Whoopi Goldberg.
