(as usual, please be comprehensive with my bad english, I am French and as you know, french peple are bad in Englis é_è)
Hello,
I was wondering about this subject today.
There are 2 facts we know about DW Universe :
- Going back in time and chanching his own past will create a paradox : if your past is changed, you will never have gone in past to change it, and your past would have never been changed, etc. Everyone here knows the Paradox thing.
- We also know that a big change in time creates a whole new parallel world, (as the world where the New Series' Cybermen comes from, or the world in 'Turn Left' when Donna turns right, and the Doctor dies, etc.)
But I noticed these 2 facts cannot exist together : If I try to add these 2 ideas, so I could go in my own past, kill my Grandfather (this famous paradox...) but will it create a real paradox ? As said in the 2nd point, this change will create a whole new parallel world, where the future me does not exist, and the Reality will switch in it. So, the future me of this new world doesn't exist, but the "me" me, from my own world, will still exist and return in the past to kill my own grandfather and create the parallel world...
Supposing this, what to think about this fear of the paradox (and all the consequences which comes with creating a paradox) ?
What do you think about this ?

Parallel worlds come to be when a person who belongs at the relevant point in time makes a choice. Paradox exists when someone from a future time period changes something in his past. The effect of the paradox can be that the person causing it ceases to exist, or gets trapped in a world where he shouldn't exist, or attracts the attention of whatever beings are supposed to stop paradoxes happenning.

So going back in time and trying to kill your grandfather probably won't work and cause the reapers to appear, but if you went back in time and convinced someone native to that time to do it, conceivably it would work without ripping reality to shred, except maybe your own existence.

There are ways around fooling time and cutting yourself out of time - this is one of the ways that Faction Paradox does it. It makes them immune from various timeweapons.

It seems that certain powerful entities can overcome paradox.
Consider how The Master converted the TARDIS into a paradox machine. This enabled the Toclafane to decimate the human population of the early 21st century, despite them having been the ancestors of the Toclafane (who were converted humans).
The ability to overcome paradox of this nature may be an ingredient in the Faction Paradox being able to cut themselves out of time. If a "newbie" time traveler attempted something similar (eg, Rose holding her infant self or trying to rescue her father in Father's Day), this seems to be an instant door-opener for the Reapers.
Some other powerful things that seem to be able to change time include: Chronosteel (from the Sarah Jane Adventures, season 4), The Trickster (also Sarah Jane Adventures, particularly in Season 2), and The Doctor (A Christmas Carol, changes the nature of one person by meddling with their past). The Daleks have probably tried to change time, but The Doctor usually prevents them from succeeding at such things. In general, from a game standpoint, the ability to change history and prevent some horrific paradox from taking place likely requires Tech Level 9 capabilities and a great deal of caution or ingenuity.

Well put.
It has been previously mentioned on the TV series as well by several Doctors - that Time Lords have had specific training and abilities given to them so they don't suffer ill effects from various time based side effects. This may include partial immunity to paradox.
