Doc -if you want a staff place so you can post news as it comes have a word with Rassilon. Aw! Nobody ever suggested I get a staff place ... I'm jealous now Anyway, nice cover! Two Brigs and Ross ... Some small consolation for getting bumped off, to be in such high ranking company Do my eyes (and the very tiny screen on my smartphone) deceive me, or is that a yeti and a non-Pete's world cyberman on the cover?

I'd actually love to run - or even play in - a UNIT campaign, but my prospective players for the RPG seem to favour the 'everybody-as-Time Lords' or 'Time Lord and Companions' formats. Apparently, without a Time Lord, it's not as much fun.

Please, please please let the Third Doctor and Jo Grant be in it...and Delgado's Master.
Oh, and also Axos, Azal, The Keller Machine, Stahlman's Gas, sod it, the whole Pertwee era UNIT.

You know, I'm not a Classic Who fan (not that I don't like it or anything, I just haven't had the chance to watch much of it) nor a UNIT fan, but I'll gladly pick up this box anyway. What can I say - I'm a completist.

Could the prominent photos of the Brigadeers be a hint that this set will include more than a little information from the Original Series? I certainlyhow so. I want all the things listed in Seven's post.
And I want information from Battlefield. I liked the use of magic in that episode, and I think magic could have a place in a Doctor Who campaign.

Clarke's Law: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".And check out Past Doctor Adventure: The Sorcerer's Apprentice for ideas on incorporating magic into Doctor Who. Clarke's Law: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".That's actually his third law. Clarke's laws are: 1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. 2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible. 3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. I prefer my law* : 'Any magic indistinguishable from advanced technology is insufficiently awesome' ;D * I say my but I'm sure it's not unique to me

I think I had my own corellary to Clarke's law in another thread, but the gist was: 1: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic 2: Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology. 3: Given sufficiently advanced technology AND magic, neither become necessary.

Clarke's Law: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". Which sums up the Who universe - there is no magic, supernatural, gods, demons, heavens or hells. There are though - very accurate simulations of the same done through the use of very esoteric technology and an understanding of the fundamental rules of the universe. So basically, it's magic for all intents and purposes - unless your character is very intelligent/Time Lord.

It strikes me that a supplement like this would benefit not only from a comprehensive history of UNIT and the menaces they fought from space, but also an actual earthbound threat.
What I mean is a human organization to act as a foil for them.
I believe the UNIT audios had one of these, which I think was an agency called ICIS or something like that. I believe the Sixth Doctor audios had another organization called 'The Forge'. This would give some nice counter-espionage and similar opportunites to roleplaying when the earth ISN'T under constant attack from monsters from Space

I liked the UNIT audios. Good gaming inspiration there. ICIS was a British-centric UNIT competitor. The idea isnt all that different than Torchwood One actually. Tennant was in there too [and in "Sympathy for the Devil']

As I recall, Tennant was the ultra-nationalist Col. Brimicombe-Wood, wasn't he? In 'Sympathy for the Devil' (which I loved) he was the head of UNIT...

'Sympathy for the Devil' was just brimming over in great talent... Great performances by David Warner and Nicholas Courtney, who slip into an ease of banter that makes you think they've worked with each other for years... David Tennant was great as Brimicombe-Wood, and Mark Gatiss needs to play his character from the play on TV. But it also provides a great setup for a UNIT game, also. Its a near perfect setup to bring the focus in on UNIT and give them a chance to shine without the Doctor to bail them out. I'm hoping this supplement will allow for that sort of thing.

The current rules allow anyone to have a Doctor-free game and defeat any menace.

The current rules allow anyone to have a Doctor-free game and defeat any menace. Yep, I'm aware of that... I'm just talking about from a story perspective, not a rules one. Thats one of the things these rules were designed for... I just know some people that would have a hard time grasping a Doctor-less/Time Lord-less game and this would be a good setup to get them to understand it.

We had a a thread over on the Hero boards called "Pulperise that" (or something similar) - where well known plots, mostly from movies, were converted to fit the pulp genre. I think it may be a good idea to start a thread like that here as well - it starts people thinking outside the box and realising that anything can be fitted into the Doctor Who genre.

Always loved that phrase, and I tended to use it in other roleplays (or plays on it, such as in Stargate with my British agent "Chap with the disk, five rounds rapid.", etc.) THE \/ince
