A recent conversation with a friend brought up this interesting 'What if' scenario: What if a past Doctor Who lead actor decided to stay on instead of leave at that season's end? What future season's story would then serve as an appropriate finale for him? What we discussed was that Patrick Troughton stayed on for some more seasons. At the end of The War Games the Time Lords exiled him to Earth, but without changing his appearance. What followed next was the classic 7th season on Earth, with the Brigadier, UNIT, Liz Shaw, Autons, Silurians, Martians, Primords. But what would have been a great moment for him to regenerate into the Third Doctor? The End of Inferno? Maybe staying on until the end of Season 8 being 'killed' by the Master at the end of The Daemons and regenerating into Jon Pertwee's incarnation with 'Day of the Daleks' being his debut? What do you think? Episode Guide: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_serials

Season 7 was probably one of the most serious of the classic Who eras, and I find it difficult to imagine the Mighty Trout in any of those stories - certainly they would have had a much different feel to them. Of all the Pertwee season finales, I suspect that The Time Monster would be the most suitable for the 2nd Doctor's exit, a rather mad escapade ending with him being fatally damaged by the effects of Kronos.

Interesting; if we then go with that 3 season delay we have:
Patrick Troughton: The Power Of The Daleks - The Time Monster Jon Pertwee: The Three Doctors - The Talons of Weng-Chiang Tom Baker: Horror of Fang Rock - The Caves of Androzani

The 3rd Doctor using his martial arts on the Tong of the Black Scorpion - oh yes! ;D But does this squeeze Peter Davison out completely?

Perhaps not, although it's bleak for two Doctors... I'd say in my version Peter Davison has: The Twin Dilemma - Survival. That covers at least 20 episodes of his plus before the show is cancelled but sadly locks out Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Quite an entertaining 'What If'.

So poor old Peter avoids Time-Flight and Warriors of the Deep, but is instead stuck with such gems as Timelash and Time and the Rani. Fair exchange?
As an alternative "What if...", what if Tom Baker had only stayed in the role for 3-4 years, as with most other actors? Say he left at the end of The Invasion of Time? That would provide a 3 year tenure for the 5th Doctor, before Peter Davison debuts as the sixth Doctor in Castrovalva.
In 1978, Peter Davison would likely have been considered too young for the role. Although he would have been about the same as Matt Smith, it would have been Graham Williams' choosing the actor for the role of the 5th Doctor, not JNT. Who are the likely candidates from that time? Graham Crowden maybe? I think he was one of the options for the 4th Doctor, and he was cast in The Horns of Nimon.
