! Plus from Combom: lifetheuniverseandcombom.blogspot.com/Digital Spy has Ten teasers about Sarah Jane Adventures Death of the Doctor!1. Doctors 1, 2, 3, 4, 10 and 11 all make an appearance. [On film I guess as 1,2,3 are dead] 2. There's mentions of Axons, Azal and Aggedor. 3. "Smells like roast chicken!" 4. The Brigadier is still stranded in Peru, while Liz Shaw is on the Moon. 5. That's Groske, not Graske. 6. The Doctor doesn't have to be white. And he can regenerate more than 12 times - a lot more! [rewriting the rules I wonder] 7. "You look like someone's baked you!" 8. Jo Jones (née Grant) has 7 children and (almost) 13 grandchildren. 9. The Doctor might never look back, but Sarah Jane has discovered some interesting things using Google. 10. "Accelerate the weave!"

from The Guardian:
Honestly, people have been suggesting the limit went away with Gallifrey ever since the introduction of the Time War. Plus, at least as far back as The Five Doctors, it was known that the Time Lords could grant additional regenerations.

4. The Brigadier is still stranded in Peru, while Liz Shaw is on the Moon. which is weird because he has appeared in SJA AFTER the Peru thing.

I kind of assumed that it was thanks to the timelords that the limit existed. With them out of the way, the cycle can repeat naturally as often as it can before it breaks down, with a limit no more clearly defined than that of human longevity.

I did read that a non-fan friend of Moffat's suggested a solution but I was expecting more than a cursory statement from the Doc like "There is no limit".

When you read the messages posted on the Guardian page, a couple of people have claimed the line suggests that the Doctor throws out some high number (something like 507) in the midst of a tense scene. I'm sure it'll generate lots of speculation regardless, but it seems like some misdirection on the Doctor's part, myself.
How it eventually is addressed by Moffat (who would be acutely aware of these references) will have my interest much more. That being said, I'll be watching the episodes with interest!

Remember how the Valeyard was going to get the Doctor's remaining regenerations when he died?
Maybe the Doctor got all the remaining regenerations of the Timelords who died under his watch in some battle or other...
In any case, I think it's all mostly just a PR ploy.

It was inevitable, to prevent the unavoidable death of the series. And welcome too, for the same reason.
There are so many possible explanations for the change (as it really should be an in-universe change rather than a retcon) that they almost don't need to bother coming up with one on screen. I've always been in favour of "exposure to time vortex energy in The Parting Of The Ways" myself.

I've had that theory since... well, not long after that episode aired.

Okay, so I've seen it now. Fun, isn't it? Jo was great, all the memories stuff was good to see, and, oddly, I was really glad to see the funny face of Matt Smith on the TV screen again As for THE LIMIT, it did kinda sound as though he was just saying it to shut Clyde up, and so RTD could pull our legs a bit Which is apparently what he's said he was doing....

I don't think anyone watching that scene could take the 507 line as a serious answer. The bit about any ethnicity being possible seemed plausible (though apparently not ginger ). K.

Ginger is a recessive trait, hitting it requires skill.

Here's something I realised while pondering the first episode. While Jo and Sarah Jane are being prompted to remember things, they both mention different gardens. Sarah talks about the one in San Martino, 1492 - from The Mask Of Mandragora. Before that, Jo talks about a garden on Karfel - a planet she and the Third Doctor visited and was later revisited by Peri and the Sixth Doctor in Timelash.
It just sort of "popped in there" while I was thinking about it. Talk about obscure references.
