I heard the BBC interview about the story. The interviewer asked "Why haven't we seen something so big before?"
A rather dumb question, IMO, that any ten-year-old could come up with a satisfactory answer to. And the astronomer did provide the answer (it's really, really far away), but not before he prefaced his remarks with:
"Of course, we've been looking directly at it for quite some time now..."
Just that line alone might be a scenario hook: the dramatic phenomenon that a whole planet of observers just chooses to ignore.

You mean like announcing a new age of prosperity, the automated mines suddenly filling with all manner of precious materials and gemstones, and the stars changing as the majority of the population of planet Zanak just goes about their business?
