The book arrived! Just a day after shipping - maybe they didn't update the status immediately they posted the book. It's in good condition, nice feel, hot glue spine and about an inch thick for its 460 pages. Importantly the page numbering is still correct. The contents at the front I should have made a larger font as it's a bit hard to read. Anyhow, I'm very impressed with the Lulu print on demand version of the Heroes and Allies word doc - so I'll reformat the others and get them printed too.
Note - next time I'll need to include more bleed on the cover images
Don't know if you want to wait, but I'm likely to be posting an illustrated version of the Aliens & Enemies file in the next few days, with an illustrated Heroes & Allies to follow after that.
I suspect the reformatting will throw the pictures out of position in many cases, so you may have a bit more work to do on those!

I would love to have a version with images (and thanks for all your work on this too!) but I did think about it - and the particular "cheapest possible option" that I'm using at Lulu is their digest format - where the pages are all black&white anyway - so if I want a book for under $10 then one without illustrations is the way to go.
The published Aliens & Enemies compilation. Turns out to be almost 490 pages, but still under $10
I'll do the others - also I encourage anyone who wants their own hardcopy of misterharry's excellent compilation to create your own Lulu account - then you could modify the look yourself (and style) - because at the moment it's got my avatar on the back because I'm printing them for myself - but you could put anything there or change the layout. Also if you publish your own book - you only pay shipping & handling on the first one, the later books are price+shipping&handling (so I'm effectively paying $10 which includes postage for the first book)
[edit] Link removed - best use print on demand for self only, and not make it available to the general public - my bad.

Incidentally if anyone who posted original creations, either of Aliens or Characters, has any pictures of them that they would particularly like included, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm trawling Google Images for pictures that match the descriptions - and in some cases that's quite a loose match!

Not wanting to rain on the parade but...
Just to double check, I assume no one is actually making a profit on the book. Otherwise there may be many, many legal problems as you're using not only the BBC's license but C7's as well. There can also sometimes be problems with doing this sort of thing for free.
While I realise this is somewhat bolting the stable door after the horse, has anyone talked to Dom or Angus about the book and made sure they have no problem with it?

I take it this doesn't apply to the files I've been making available for download in Word or pdf format from this thread?

I'm certainly no lawyer so I couldn't tell you I'm afraid. I do know that sometimes companies have to stop any use of their licence as otherwise it sets a precedent that allows anyone to do stuff with it (hence Games workshop stopping a Warhammer fan film from release).
I'd be surprised if the files broke anything as you have used only new content and no pictures and (I assume) arn't making a profit. However, Doctor Who does belong to the BBC, and the rules system belongs to Cubicle 7.
The best person to ask is Dom or Angus. I'll see if I can nudge one of them to have a look. (I'm still trying to get Dom to release the stuff from gen Con too) But Dom is at Essen I think at the moment so might be a while.

So I can't make available the illustrated versions of the files I've been working on with pictures added?
To be honest, I'd be disappointed if that were the case. These files aren't even at the level of fanzines, and I doubt that 99% of those published over the past 30-odd years have had BBC approval and yet have included photos from the series.
To be absolutely clear, the files have just been posted here, or a link provided to download them - no money has changed hands, and they are mainly a compilation of the various submissions on this forum and linked blogs, with a few bits and pieces added from myself.

As I say, I suspect its fine. (although fanzines arn't always ok with the BBC they just can't be bothered to go after them) I'm just saying you should check with someone who might know (which isn't me as I don't know the exact terms of the license) I'm just flagging a possible problem, and in no way the arbiter of what you can or can't do.
It is highly unlikly you will be sued or anything. But if the BBC does have a problem with it, it is not inconceivable they will take away C7's license. So I'm just suggesting (and this goes for fanzines as well) its best to check.

I have experience with publishing and copyright and there are alarms going off.
I suggest you keep it as a pdf for a fan forum only. If anyone wants to get it printed privately for personal use, that’s fine but having this publicly available is a no-no.
For it to be 100% safe, you need to ask every single person who contributed original content, including art, and the BBC for permission, otherwise you and Lulu can be sued.
The only way around this is to keep it a no-fee pdf file for use privately in a private fan-forum.
We also make this statement:
This forum and its staff has absolutely nothing to do with this product listed on Lulu. The contents were and are available free on this forum for private use as fan-created content. We did not authorize this content to be used in any way outside of this private fan forum or have any notice that this compilation was to be publicly sold.
Admin
We had no idea you were making this publicly available for sale.

Yes, I should have realised - I'll remove links and things - folk can publish it for themselves for personal use if they really want a hardcopy version.
I should add, that while I had no markup on the books, the print on demand service would have been profitting, so best not that I give them franchise that is unlicensed.

I shouldn't make available on a print on demand site the efforts of the gamers on this board - as I've not sought their permission that their work be published in print form. It's fine (in my opinion) to have a compilation of the posts directly accessible within this forum and no money is involved (or third party companies for that matter) - but it's another thing to copy the content elsewhere which would increase the popularity of the third party.
I'm still keen on promoting Lulu as they have the cheapest deals I've seen in getting book-forms of electronic documents - after all it was so cheap for over 400 pages! There'd be no way I could do that on my printer at home, let alone even a photocopier!
But it's best that folk use whatever service they like, and do it for their own personal use only, and tell others if they want the same, they need to do it for themselves as well - rather than doing it for them.
Although it's too late now, a good idea would be to have a disclaimer for the forum that work submitted could be published by Cubicle 7 with attribution. It would be nice to have official-ish publishing of this content, with a company that actually has some licensing for some of it (albeit it would be tricky for the fan DWAITAS versions of other franchises' characters and IP)
I would like to see a poll or submission form where authors of content here, who have made original work, or have used only the Doctor Who franchise, could waive their inherent copyright (which exists in some countries, but not all) and choose a Creative Commons license such that their work could be published by Cubicle 7 - with as much editing as needed. I for one would sign it - except that I've done Faction Paradox characters mostly, which wouldn't be usable under the Doctor Who license

Thanks for the corrections list - I'll make these amendments so that they appear in the next versions I post.
The one thing I'm reluctant to do is remove the Weng-Chiang text completely. Could you post or PM me with the specific points that need correcting? Thanks.

Yea the BBC will crack down on you, did you know that you need a license from the BBC to build your own Dalek! They are not like the other companies who let people make fan stuff. I saw where a guy was putting out novelizations of the new series with old target styled covers for free and they shut him down.

Frankly, I doubt that the BBC could care a hoot about these files. And no, you don't need a licence to build your own Dalek, so long as it's just for your own private use - you're not selling it on, using it in a public performance, etc. There are loads of fan-made items out there - fanzines, websites, recon videos, fan fiction, etc - the vast majority of which the BBC turns a blind eye to. It's just not in their interests to pursue fans in that manner unless they cross the line in some way, usually by making it commercial. These files fall way below their radar.
Cubicle 7 is a slightly different matter, but as I've said, if the BBC (or more likely C7) ask for the files to be removed, I will do so.

Re: Weng- Chiang
In the quote "feast" should be "beasts"
Li H'sen Chang is spelt incorrectly
The author believes Greel landed in London in the 1880's instead of China in the 1860's( since the Litefoot family returned to Britain with the Time Cabinet in 1870 thus neglecting Greel and Chang's 20 odd year quest to regain it if "Talons" is set in 1892)

Thanks - I've made these amendments.
New versions of all the compilations files are now available to download (with the exception of Gadgets, Equipment & Vehicles, which hasn't had any changes since the version already available):
Edit: Link temporarily removed, as I'm expecting to be able to post illustrated files tonight.

Too bad the Print-on-Demand thing is out. I was going to order one for the Aliens & Enemies book, since printing it myself would cost about $200 for color. By taking the files to a Kinkos or some such place.
But, I can fully understand the copyright issue, and the Forum Admins not wanting to take any chances of the BBC or Cubicle7 suing anyone. That could really be a nasty mess.
But even without having them printed, the files are a boon and a blessing to Doctor Who play.

Print on Demand isn't out - there's nothing stopping you using whatever service you like for personal use. The only problem is making it available to others or using material you haven't got rights to (hence why I took down my online versions on Lulu).
Just get the compilation, and print it out yourself - it wasn't difficult to use the interface or reformat the layout. The only problem is with the PDFs (which is why I used the older DOC version) - because they don't have embedded fonts.
I've just noticed that the compilation doesn't include Craig Owens from "The Lodger". Has anyone done a write-up for him?
Wyvern
Apparently there are some official stats for Craig which will appear in the 11th Doctor Edition when that is finally released. I believe he's been used as a PC in one or two convention games - I recall at least one forum member saying they've had sight of the character sheet. But as they're official stats they're C7 copyright and can't be posted here.
As for unofficial stats, I'm not aware of any having been posted online anywhere yet. I've not attempted a write-up for him myself as the ever-imminent release of the 11th Doctor Edition would make it redundant within a few months - not that this has stopped me from statting up other characters we know will also be included (Amy, Rory, one or two monsters)!
Also available is an updated version of The Doctor's Age, listing all references from TV episodes and spin-off stories as to how old the Doctor actually is.
